Estonian rye bread, imported by Amest Foods, was represented at the world's largest food fair, the Natural Products Expo West in Anaheim, California, for the fifth straight year. Products are chosen very carefully for the fair, everything must be natural and visitors to the fair must work actively in the food industry. Customers will soon be able to order Estonian dark rye bread via the importer's webpage.

2019 Esto Ski Pic

For the third year in a row, USA and Canadian ESTOS converged on Mont Tremblant, Quebec on March 7th for a 3-day weekend of skiing, snowboarding and socializing. This year’s group surged to over 220 people with the mix of participants being fairly evenly split between our friends from the north and USA ESTOS.

Hinnasula

Astu sisse. (Step in.) Saad sooja. (You'll get warm(ed up).) This is the invitation in front of the Joutsen shop on Kaarli pst (puies/tee, boulevard) in central Tallinn. Joutsen is a Finnish company which makes and sells "Northern Light Down" in the form of padjad (pillows), sule/tekid (duvets) and mantlid (coats) filled with udu/suled (literally "fog feathers", down in Estonian). The word slapped across the plakat (poster) in red reads: hinna/sula = price melt. It's so toasty in there, the prices are melting. If something is very delicious, it can be described, (in one word of course), as suus/sulav (melt in your mouth). Another campaign, "Mammuti päevad" (Mammoth Days) are currently on at Rimi supermarkets in Eesti; the woolly maskotid of the sale have melted out of the igi/kelts (permafrost), with prices dropped and savings as big as their võhad (tusks).

The Estonian American National Council has appointed Leelo Linask from Monroe, CT, as its new Executive Director, effective March 1. She replaces its long-time employee, Linda Rink, who resigned at the end of 2018.

Artist Kaire van der Toorn-Guthan, an Estonian living in the Netherlands, conceived of her project "Eesti läbi 100 silmapaari" (“Estonia Through 100 Pairs of Eyes”) in San Francisco during the LEP-ESTO festival in 2013. The project, which shows Estonia through the perspectives and lives of one hundred photograph portrait subjects, grew into a way to celebrate and share Estonian stories during Estonia’s centennial year.

On March 13, during a working visit to the US, President Kersti Kaljulaid met with Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelo-si. They discussed security and defence cooperation, the situation in Ukraine, hybrid threats and bilateral Estonian-US cooperation.
