The stickers handed out to students last week read: "Terry ran for me. I am running for ____" This 5th grader in Toronto ran for her vana/ema (grandmother), in this case called Mamma, who fought rinna/vähk (breast cancer) at age 82 in Eesti this past year and survived. She is currently mushrooming on Saaremaa island. In this eesti keele year and recent week, it's also a good reminder that in Estonian Mamma is written with 2 M-s. The Estonian American National Council is proud to announce its sponsorship of an upcoming documentary series about Estonia to be broadcast on PBS this autumn. Shown as the season premier, the three Estonian episodes will kick off the long-running world affairs series “This is America & The World”. The episodes will begin airing the first weekend in October. (Please check your local PBS stations and TV guides for local program scheduling.)

President Kaljulaid at the UN General Assembly
President Kersti Kaljulaid was on a working visit to New York this week to attend the annual UN General Assembly. In addition to bilateral meetings with other heads of state and participation in various debates, the President of the Republic delivered a state address at the General Assembly on September 24. Foreign Minister Urmas Reinsalu was also in NY attending dozens of meetings during the opening week of the UN General Assembly.

75 Years Since the Great Refugee Flight to the West
75 years have passed since the Great Refugee Flight to the West, during which close to 80 000 people fled Estonia in the fall of 1944. The event is being commemorated from September 18 to 22 in Tallinn, Tartu, Haapsalu and in many places worldwide, where families of people who fled now reside. The annual commemoration is the successful initiative of the Estonian World Council.
