Multiple Events Commemorate the 1944 Great Refugee Flight

On September 19, a monument was unveiled on the seashore of Puise peninsula in Lääne County, dedicated to the 75 000+ people, who fled Estonia ahead of the second Soviet invasion in the fall of 1944.

More than 5000 of those who fled lost their lives on the journey.

The bottom part of the monument was unveiled a year ago, on the 75th anniversary of the tragic episode in history, and this year the completed sculpture by Aivar (Seaküla) Simson of a mother with a suitcase in one hand and child holding a stuffed bear in the other was unveiled, completing the memorial.

On September 20 and 21, the installation "Boat of Tears", featuring three wooden boats, like the ones used to escape, was on display in Tallinn's Freedom Square.

Interior Minister: All EU States Should Agree on Migration and Asylum Pact

Minister of the Interior Mart Helme says European Union member states are just starting to form mutual opinions about the European Commission's proposal for a new pact on migration and asylum.

A meeting between the EU ministers of the interior will take place on October 8 and the matter will be discussed then.

"We will definitely repeat our position that we don't support mandatory relocation of asylum seekers at the meeting.

Ultimately we need a compromise solution that is suitable for all European Union countries," the Minister said.
