First Ever Virtual EANC Annual Meeting
The 22nd representative body of the Estonian American National Council, Inc. (EANC) held its annual plenary meeting on November 14 and 15 for the first time in virtual format.
All 28 elected members of the representative body participated.
Estonian Digital Words Contest Yields Thousands of Proposals
The "Sõnaus" call for people to propose new digital words in Estonian to replace words derived from English produced a total of 3,866 proposals from 1,191 people and 41 groups over three and a half weeks.
That is almost double the yield of the first Sõnaus contest of a decade ago.
People were then invited to vote for their favourite word proposals and a committee of linguists and interested parties highlighted the ten top terms.
The most popular neologism was "lühik", which was proposed 28 times as a translation of the word "shortcut."
Government Closes All Estonian Schools as of December 14
Based on recommendations of the Health Board, the Estonian government established new temporary restrictions, closing all educational institutions as of December 14, one week earlier than the scheduled Christmas holiday.
Most schools will continue to study via distance learning. Prime minister Jüri Ratas shed more light on the government's decision, saying the trade-off is the continuation of scheduled treatments in hospitals.
TransferWise to Recruit 165 New Employees in Estonia
TransferWise, a London-based online money transfer service founded in January 2011 by two Estonians, will create 750 new jobs over the next six months, of which more than 150 will be located in Tallinn.
Last year the company's revenue increased by 70 percent to 302.6 million pounds, the company announced.
TransferWise currently has 2,200 employees, more than 900 of whom are based in Tallinn.
