ERR News - A 12-strong group of adventurers set off this week on a month-long journey to northern Siberia, where thousands of Estonians were deported during the Soviet era. The team will drive four specially built off-road vehicles first to Norilsk, then to Yamal Peninsula and the mining town of Vorkuta, reported ETV. Hundreds of thousands of people, including thousands of Estonians, were deported to these areas in the 1940s. The expedition will visit labor camps and commemorate the hardship Estonians had to endure. “Many were deported to Norilsk and in the 1990s a monument was erected there for Estonians and for the whole of the Baltics,” said a member of the expedition, Rait Paimets. A travel log of the expedition has been set up but is only available in Estonian. The same team traveled to Magadan in eastern Russia, around 6,000 km, away last summer.
