ERR News – The Police and Border Guard Board’s East Prefecture is seeking to fill 70 positions in Narva, and two on a remote island off Estonia’s northern coast, but has only received a few applications for the first offer, and 400 for the second.
A total of 382 applications were sent to the prefecture for the positions of watchman of otherwise uninhabited Vaindloo island, 30 kilometers off the northern coast, reported local media outlet Virumaa Teataja on November 21.
The chosen two people will have to maintain the border guard’s apparatus and buildings, heat the buildings, and perform other menial tasks in solitary shifts of one week on, one week rest.
In a far less successful procurement, the prefecture is seeking 70 people to work in a new border crossing point to be constructed in Narva, reported ERR radio.
Although construction work on the facility is yet to begin, the first introductory event has already taken place, with only a few people showing up.
The head of the region’s border guards, Aimar Köss, said that they are advertizing nationally, as locals have shown little interest due to language requirements.
Köss said they hope to find most of the staff by the end of 2014, but could open the new border checkpoint undermanned.
The cited wages for the two positions vary, with the Vaindloo position paying upwards of 640 euros monthly, before tax, while the average entry-level border guard is paid around 800 euros.
