90th Anniversary of the Birth of President Lennart Meri
March 29 marks 90 years since the birth of writer, translator, filmmaker, diplomat and politician President Lennart Meri. President Meri will be commemorated with special programs at both the Estonian National Museum in Tartu and on Estonian Public Broadcasting. On Friday, March 29th, a 90 minute open-air reading of Meri’s famous writings will take place in front of Kadriorg palace and everybody is welcome to attend.
Swedish Media: €135 Billion High-Risk Non-Resident Money Moved Through Swedbank Estonia
An internal report by Swedbank, available to Swedish public broadcaster SVT, states that within 10 years some €135 billion in high-risk money moved through the bank’s Estonian branch. Sweden’s economic crime investigation unit conducted a search of Swedbank’s Stockholm headquarters on March 27. Swedbank’s value on the stock exchange has decreased by EUR 6.15 billion.
Feature film “Take It or Leave It” Wins Best Film Award in France
Estonian feature film “Take It or Leave It” (Võta või jäta), part of the Estonia 100 film programme, won the Best Film Award (Grand Prix) at the d’Aubagne International Film Festival in France. The 20th d’Aubagne Film Festival is famous for focusing on film music.
Textile Producers Sangar and Baltika to End Production in Estonia
Less than a week after fashion producer Baltika announced it would end production in Estonia and lay off some 350 workers, another textile company, shirt producer Sangar, announced it will do the same. Sangar began production in 1944, and the closure of its production line will mean the end of 75 years of Estonian industrial history.
