The Connecticut Estonian Society (CES) held its traditional Diaspora Estonia Day potluck-style dinner on November 19th.
The CES Chairman, – Jaak Rakfeldt, Ph.D., presented a speech that he recently gave at the Estonian Parliament in Tallinn. His speech strongly urged the members of Parliament to create a day of remembrance for the 80,000 Estonians who fled from the brutal Soviet onslaught and occupation in the fall of 1944. Professor Rakfeldt presented an English-language version of this speech so everyone could understand it. Following his talk, several audience members shared their harrowing first-person accounts of their escapes. This led to a very powerful, poignant discussion and sharing of memories. These memories were particularly significant for the young people present. Some of whom may have learned about these events for the first time.
A wonderful roast pork dinner followed that allowed members of the Connecticut Estonian Community to spend time together with warmth, conviviality, and friendship.
