The fund supporting Ukrainian refugee students studying at the University of Tartu provided much needed financial assistance to 113 refugee students last semester. 117,000 euros was granted to Ukrainian students in need. Funding for this support has been a truly international effort, with a large measure of the donated money coming from the Estonian diaspora.
Estonian organizations and individuals in both Canada and the United States have either donated or made commitments to donate almost $75,000 CDN in support of Ukrainian refugee students. Many Estonian fraternities and sororities with chapters in Canada and the United States, that have historical ties to the Unversity of Tartu, have also generously contributed to the fund.
The needs of Ukrainian refugee students for support continues, but is limited by the money donated to the Fund.
The link below is an appeal from the Vice Rector of the University, Aune Valk, for continued support. She emphasizes that every donation no matter how large or small, is needed and will be accepted with both the thanks and gratitude of the University.
Testimonials from Ukrainian students themselves underscore the value and necessity for the support provided.
“I am studying Business Administration at the University of Tartu. The scholarship received was a huge help to both myself and my family. My father had to close his business in Ukraine and was unable to further support my studies financially. The financial support received covered my needs for many months. Thank you for supporting Ukraine in these difficult times.”
“I am extremely grateful for the support received from the University. It came swiftly and made a huge difference for me, my studies and my family. As my mother lost her job in Ukraine, the financial support received provided a necessary financial buffer and helped me cover my living expenses for several months.”
