Santa Cruz Dance & Cid Pearlman / Performance Projects presents: FROM ESTONIA WITH LOVE, May 2012
Five dance artists from Estonia and the USA join choreographer Cid Pearlman for an evening of intelligent and deeply embodied dancing. Santa Cruz is their first stop on a California tour (May 17-18). Tickets are $15-$20 in advance. The other cities on the tour are: San Francisco and Los Angeles. In addition to performances in these three cities, master classes will, also, be taught and workshops for children held, with lectures and demonstrations.
During the 2009-10 academic year C. Pearlman was a Fulbright Scholar in Estonia, teaching at Tallinn University and worked with local dance artists; co-produced an academic symposium, had his choreography produced at Kanuti Gild Saal and NoTaFe. He was, also, on the jury at Koolitants, etc. He has been back to Estonia twice since, with support from the US Embassy & The Union of Estonian Dance Artists. The mini-tour –“This is What We Do in The Winter” (original score by Jonathan Segel), plus dances choreographed by Rain Saukas, Tiina Mölder, Helen Reitsnik and Alexis Steeves – will feature Estonian and American dancers. He is presently in Tallinn creating a new performance for the Hiiumaa Dance Festival this summer.
The dancers arrive in the US on May 8 and leave on May 26th. Evelyn Lagele, a Master's student who has received funding from DoRa and is writing about Cid Pearlman’s works for her theses, is accompanying the tour. Last year $6,000. was raised to pay for the dancers’ plane fares, via USA Projects, (see: http://www.usaprojects.org/project/this_is_what_we_do_in_winter). The project is primarily made possible by individual contributions; still, more funds are needed to cover some remaining expenses. They are hoping that there will be some individuals that would like to help with their kickstarter fundraiser:
