ERKÜ Valimiste Peakomitee avaldab lõpliku kandidaatide nimistu XXI Esinduskokku, koos tutvustamistega.  Valimissedelid  koos valimiste juhtnööridega ja kandidaatide informatsiooniga saadetakse lihtposti teel järgmistel nädalatel kõigile, kelle nimed on ERKÜ andmebaasis. The EANC Election Committee submits the final list of candidates to the XXI Council, with their introductions.  Election ballots will be mailed in the next few weeks to all who are in EANC’s database, together with voting instructions and candidate information.

KRISTI VUHT ALLPERE

Residence: Atlanta, Georgia
Born: 1943

 

Born in Pärnu, came to Canada as a refugee in ‘49. Raised in Toronto, graduated from U. of Toronto, BA History. Belongs to Korp! Amicitia. Fluent in Estonian, English and German.

 

Participated in the Toronto Estonian community: Eesti Kool, folk dancing, girl guides, gymnastics-võimlemine, church etc. Married, with 2 sons and 2 grandchildren. Husband’s career posted them to various US cities and to Europe. In Vienna, assisted Estonian refugees from USSR; after independence, helped Estonians students and travelers in the same city.

 

Active in Atlanta as a volunteer, including the Atlanta Olympics. Lectured on Estonian culture and history at local elem. and high schools. Initiated Estonian participation in the Scandinavian Festival.

 

Organized receptions for Paavo and Kristjan Järvi while guests with the Atlanta Symphony.

 

Supports husband in his duties as the Honorary Consul of Estonia.

 

Have hosted Estonian functions at their home. Founded an informal “Friends of Estonia” group.  Hosted reception for the group during the Estonian Symphony Orchestra’s concert at Emory Univ. Sponsored 6 Estonian students to Ga. Universities. She is an organizer and good communicator, who believes in giving back to her community.

 

I am a good public speaker who can represent Estonia convincingly. I wish to be a liaison between ERKÜ and the growing Estonian group in the South East. I have good local connections. My mission is to tell the “Estonian Story” and thereby build understanding and support (and tourism to Estonia). We have led American groups on visits to Estonia. We use all opportunities to promote Estonia and use the film “Singing Revolution” as a vehicle to build awareness of our culture and country. My heart is in the “right place.”

 

 

Sündinud Pärnus, põgenikutee viis Torontosse. Lõpetas Toronto Ülikooli ajaloo alal. Kuulub Korp! Amicitiasse. Kõneleb vabalt eesti, inglise ja saksa keelt. Elas kaasa Toronto eestlaskonnas: eesti kool, rahvatants, gaidlus, võimlemine, kirik jne. Abielus, tal on kaks poega ja kaks lapselast.

 

Abikaasa töö viis perekonna elama mitmesse linna kahel mandril. Töötas vabatahtlikuna Viinis, aidates ka eesti põgenikke Nõuk. Eestist; peale Eesti vabanemist eesti õpilasi ja reisijaid Viinis. Atlantas jätkas vabatahtlikuna tööd paljudes asutustes ja organisatsioonides, ka Atlanta olümpiamängudel ‘96. Sponsoreeris 6 eesti üliõpilast Georgia osariigi ülikoolidesse. Pidanud loenguid Eesti kohta Atlanta alg- ning keskkoolides. Alustas eestlaste osalust Skandinaavia Festivalil.

 

Organiseeris vastuvõtu Paavo ja Kristjan Järvile, kui nad külastasid Atlantat seoses Atlanta Sümfooniaorkestriga. Toetab aukonsulist abikaasat tema kohustuste täitmisel. On korraldanud oma kodus koosviibimisi eesti tähtpäevade puhul kohalikule eestlaskonnale. Abikaasaga asutas mitteametliku grupi “Friends of Estonia”. Korraldas vastuvõtu sellele grupile, kui Eesti Riiklik Sümfooniaorkester andis kontserdi Emory Ülikoolis. Külastab tihti Eestit, viies sinna ka ameeriklasi. Kasutab igat võimalust tutvustamaks Eestit, tarvitades sealjuures ka filmi “Singing Revolution”, et tõsta ameeriklaste teadmisi eesti kultuuri ja maa kohta.

 

Olen organiseerija ja hea suhtleja. Usun kogukonna kaasatõmbamisse ja oskan kõneleda veenvalt eesti teemadel. Mul on head kohalikud kontaktid. Soovin olla lüliks ERKÜ ja kasvava eesti kogukonna vahel kagu Ameerikas. Minu missioon on rääkida “Eesti Juttu”. Mu süda on “õiges kohas”.

 

ALIISA ALTAU

Born: 1990

 

Olen sündinud Helsingis,  Soomes. Kolisin USA-sse viieaastasena. Olen eluaeg eesti keelt kodus rääkinud ja käin tihti sugulaste juures Eestis ja Rootsis.

 

Lapsena käisin lühikest aega Baltimore’i Eesti Koolis (kuigi sõit oli siis 400 miili pikk). Olen kaks suve veetnud eesti suvelaagris Long Island, New Yorgis. Käisin leeris Järvemetsal, New Jersey’s. Lõpetasin 2012.a. Shenandoah Ülikooli B.A. kraadiga Communications alal. Praktikal olin WINC-FM (92.5) raadiojaamas.  Olen eluaeg tegelenud eestlusega. Palju aastaid olen vabatahtlikuna aidanud JBANC’i juures, kus minu isa töötab. Praktikandina töötasin neli kuud JBANC’i juures, aidates korraldada nende konverentsi 2013. a. Olen ka tihti käinud Maryland’i Eesti Sõprusgrupi üritustel.

 

 

I was born in Helsinki, Finland, and moved to the United States when I was five.

 

I have spoken Estonian at home my entire life and frequently visit my relatives in Estonia and Sweden.  As a child, went to the Baltimore Estonian School for a short time (even though the trip was then 400 miles).  I have gone to the Long Island Estonian Summer Camp for two summers.  My communion was at Järvemetsa, New Jersey.  I received my B.A. in communications from Shenandoah University and worked for WINC-FM radio.  I have participated in Estonian activities my whole life. I have volunteered at JBANC for many years, where my father works.  I interned there for four months, where I helped organize JBANC’s 2013 Conference.  I have also frequently attended events with the Maryland Estonian Friendship Group.

 

MAI-LIIS BARTLING

Residence:   Novato, California
Born: 1953

 

Born in Germany. Came to the US in 1956.

 

Attended Estonian continuation school Los Angeles, participated in folk dancing, girl scouts, and Estonian youth club. Attended Metsaülikool at Kotkajärve, Canada. Graduated from UC Santa Barbara with a degree in Urban Studies. Married, with three grown children. Lives in San Francisco Bay Area.

 

Retired from a 31-year career with the National Park Service, as Deputy Superintendent of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area in San Francisco. Currently President of Estonian Society of SF, was also one of the organizers of the LEP/ESTO 2013. Started Estonian language ’’Language Ring“. The Ring focuses on improving and maintaining spoken Estonian. Founded a monthly email newsletter “This and that,” to share info. Has assisted in restarting the Estonian children’s school.

 

The ongoing challenge is to keep reaching out and to grow programs that are relevant, build community, and connect people to their Estonian heritage and to Estonia today. I would be honored to serve on the EANC Council for many reasons: meet others to share ideas, understand how challenges are being met, and to collaborate on new efforts.

 

Sündinud Saksamaal. Jõudis USA-sse 1956. a.

 

Los Angeleses käis eesti täienduskoolis, oli rahvatantsu rühmas, võttis osa gaidlusest, kuulus ‘’Noorte Klubisse’’. Osales Metsaülikoolis Kotkajärvel, Canadas. Lõpetas UC Santa Barbara bakalaureuse kraadiga. Abielus, kolme täiskasvanud lapse ema. Elab Põhja- Californias.

 

Läinud erru peale 31-aastast teenistust National Park Service’is. On praegu San  Francisco Eesti Seltsi president. Aitas ka LEP/ESTO 2013 korraldada. Alustas kahe noorega “Keele ringi’’, mis keskendub eesti keele rääkimise oskuse alalhoidmise- ja parandamisele. Sama tiimiga rajas ka meili teel saadetava uudiste kuukirja “Seda ja teist”, et infot vahendada. On aidanud taaselustada SF täienduskooli.

 

Kestev väljakutse on, et arendada programme, mis aitavad haarata kaasa ja ehitada kogukondi ning ühendavad eestlasi oma kultuurivaramuga ja ka Eestiga. Mulle oleks au teenida Esinduskogus mitmetel põhjustel, ka selleks, et kohata mõttekaaslasi ja jagada ideid, õppida kuidas väljakutsed rahuldatakse ja töötada koos uutel ettevõtmistel.

Soovin jätkata osalemist EANC töös ja kaasa aidata eesti keele ja kultuuri säilitamisele maailma mastaabis. Ajal, mil paljud “kodueestlased” võõrsile suunduvad, on see eriti oluline tegevus.

 

Born and raised in Tallinn, Estonia. I have lived in the USA since 1990. Studied at UCLA and graduated CCP with Highest Honors, majoring in photography.

 

Currently work as an archivist at the Estonian Archives in the United States in Lakewood, New Jersey.

 

Freelance journalist, regular blog in Õhtuleht, as well as many articles for Delfi, Eesti Naine and for Eesti Elu, a Canadian publication.

 

I wish to continue participating in EANC’s work and help preserve Estonian cultural heritage.

 

Now, when many “native Estonians” are leaving for other countries, this is an especially important task.

 

MARIANNE AINOTAR BROKAW

Residence: Houghton, Michigan

 

I am an Estonian-American, born in Germany, with both US and Estonian citizenship. Growing up in a small community far from North American Estonian organizations, our little family of four was on its own to keep the Estonian language and customs alive. We spoke Estonian at home while I was growing up and attended Estonian festivals in Toronto and New York. I have visited Estonia more than 20 times, starting in 1971, and lived there for six months in 1990 with my American husband, Alan, and two children.

 

Alan, a marketing professor at Michigan Technological University, taught the first marketing course at Tartu University while I translated by his side. With my background in technical writing and editing, I also taught workshops in communication. I consult with a Tartu publishing firm that provides English language instruction for Estonian public schools and have edited Estonian scholarly publications, improving the English. I have translated into English my parents’ wartime diaries and letters. As my husband and I continued to regularly visit Tartu for work and personal needs, we bought an apartment in 2002, making Tartu our second home.

 

My contributions to Estonian activities thus far have been more local and person-to-person. Election to the Estonian American National Council would give me a platform for contributing in a broader context. I am particularly interested in supporting the needs of Estonians who, like me, aren’t in the typical centers of Estonian life here or abroad. I am also interested in preserving Estonian immigrant history.  As the WWII generation leaves us, we need to be sure we are keeping its legacy alive, not only through published memoirs and histories but also through personal belongings, records, correspondence, and diaries.

 

I could be a useful addition to the Council because of my long-term connections and perspective on Estonian life from the Soviet era to the present day. While the Estonian people have quickly moved forward since independence, the years of Soviet domination have left their mark. We all have important roles to play in supporting and encouraging even greater accomplishments by Estonians everywhere.  I would be proud to be part of an organization that supports activities that are near and dear to my heart.

 

Olen Ameerika eestlane, sündinud Saksamaal, omades nii Eesti kui Ameerika kodakondsust. Kasvasin üles väikeses Ameerika linnakeses, kaugel eestlaste keskustest. Meie neljaliikmeline perekond pidi ise eesti keele ja kultuuri säilitamisega hakkama saama. Kasvades kodus, rääkisin eesti keelt ja käisin nii Torontos kui New Yorgis eesti festivalidel. Olen palju Eestit külastanud 1971. aastast saadik ning seal ka 1990 a. kuus kuud elanud ameeriklasest abikaasa ja kahe lapsega.

 

Professorist abikaasa õpetas Tartu Ülikoolis turunduse kursust, samal ajal, seistes ta kõrval, olin talle tõlgiks. Omades tagapõhja tehnilise kirjutamise ja toimetamise alal, andsin Eestis seminare suhtlemises. Nõustan üht Eesti kirjastajat kooliõpikute tõlkimisel inglise keelde ja olen redigeerinud teaduslikke kirjutisi. Olen tõlkinud ka oma vanemate sõjaaegseid päevikuid ja kirju inglise keelde. Kuna käime tihti Eestis, ostsime 2002. a. Tartusse korteri, tehes sellega Tartu meie teiseks koduks.

 

Arvan, et võiksin olla kasulik Esinduskogu liige, kuna mul on pikaajalised suhted Eestiga ja kogemused nõukogude ajast tänapäevani. Eestlased on kiirelt liikunud edasi taasvabanemisest saadik, kuid nõukogude aeg on veel jätnud oma taaga meie rahva sisemusse. Meil on kõigil tähtis roll mängida toetamaks eestlaste püüdeid veel suuremateks saavutusteks, kus iganes nad ka ei ela. Oleksin uhke kuuludes organisatsiooni, kes toetab püüdlusi, mis on mulle  südamelähedased.

 

MONIKA ORUMAA CRAIG

Born: 1953

I was born in Miami, FL to Estonian parents and while we were a small community, had a very rich Estonian experience. We had our own Estonian House and we learned to sing, dance and do theater in Estonian.  Our family had many Estonian friends in Toronto, and in 1972 I went to the 1972 ESTO in Toronto, and stayed there for 8 years.  I now live in Sarasota, FL where I am a paralegal for a lawyer in a private law firm, am a Stephen Minister, enjoy the rich culture here and am active in my Estonian community.  

 

My father and stepfather fled Sweden in 1947 in a 38′ Swedish fishing boat with 15 others and landed in Miami. My parents and stepfather gave me a love for Eesti that has never let up. I have traveled to Eesti almost 25 times since 1975, and have seen many changes. While I don’t serve as Vice President anymore of the West Coast Florida Estonian Society, I am still active. In the last few years, I have organized several receptions for Anu Tali in Sarasota prior to, and after her appointment as the new music director of the Sarasota Orchestra. I recently organized a book signing for Urve Tamberg from Toronto in Sarasota, and also, we hosted Mihkel Raud from Eesti who premiered his play in St. Petersburg, FL. I have been on the Council for one term and am applying again due to my extreme interest in what is going on in Europe, and realize the importance of our presence in Washington and the world marketplace as Estonians.

 

Sündisin Miami, Floridas, mu vanemad on eestlased. Olgugi, et meil oli väike eesti kogukond, sain seal rikkaliku eesti kogemuse. Meil oli oma Eesti Maja, kus me õppisime laulma, tantsima ja tegema eestikeelset teatrit. Meie perekonnal oli palju eesti sõpru Torontos, ja kui ma läksin sinna  1972. a. ESTOle, jäin sinna kaheksaks aastaks. Nüüd elan Sarasotas, kus töötan advokaadi abilisena ühes erafirmas, olles ka Stephen Minister. Naudin siinset rikkaliku kultuurielu ning olen aktiivne eesti kogukonnas.

 

Mu isa ja kasuisa põgenesid 1947. a. Rootsist 15 teise põgenikuga 38-jalase kalapaadiga, maabudes Miamis. Sain isalt ja kasuisalt kustumata armastuse Eesti ja eestluse vastu. Olen teinud ligi 25 reisi Eestisse 1975. a. saadik, olles seal kogenud palju muudatusi üle aastate. Olen tegev Florida Läänekalda Eesti Seltsis, olles varem olnud seal asepresident. Viimastel aastatel olen organiseerinud mitu vastuvõttu Anu Talile, enne ja peale tema nimetamist Sarasota Orkestri peadirigendiks. Hiljuti korraldasin Sarasotas Urve Tambergile Torontost tema raamatu esitluse ning võtsime vastu Mihkel Raua Eestist tema näidendi esietendusel  St. Petersburg, Floridas. Olen olnud Esinduskogus ühe ametiaja ning kandideerin uuesti, olles väga huvitet, mis on Euroopas juhtumas ning aru saades tähtsusest olla kohal Washingtonis ja maailmaareenil eestlastena.

 

MARIT DAVEY

Residence:  Rohnert Park, California
Born: 1979

 

Marit on Viljandist pärit abielunaine ja kahe poja ema. Elab Californias 2001 a. saadik. Koolinoorena Eestis võttis osa nii laulu- kui tantsupeost. Kogu kooliaja kuulus mitmekordseks laureaadiks saanud rühmvõimlemise  gruppi, mis omakorda süstis verre nii võistlushimu kui koostöö oskuse. Ülikooli lõpetas Tallinnas, õppides rahvusvahelist ärijuhtimist ning spetsialiseerus juhtimisele. Viimased kaks aastat on ta töötanud globaalses  konsultatsioonfirmas. Marit on olnud San Francisco Eesti Seltsi juhtiv liige alates 2009 aastast ning oli üks LEP-ESTO initsiaatoritest ja ürituse asepresident ning kaasvastutaja programmi sujumise eest. Veel langes tema õlgadele ürituse majutus ning sponsorite ja toetuste hankimine. Mariti isiklik eesmärk oli selle ürituse raames Eestile tähelepanu tuua ja San Francisco elanikele eesti kultuuri ja ajalugu tutvustada. Ta usub, et avagala ja EXPO “Avasta Eestit” korraldajana õnnestus see eesmärk saavutada.
2013 a. algatas ta SF eestlaste jõululaada, mis osutus väga edukaks. Mariti tuleviku idee on korraldada San Francisco Bay Area balti jõululaat.

 

2014 a. toimetab ta Eesti by the Bay veebilehte (www.eestibythebay.org), mis on saanud hea alguse. Pikaajalises perspektiivis on soov siduda kogu Läänekalda eestlaste ühiskonnad otseselt Eestiga.

 

Marit grew up in Viljandi and now resides in California with her husband and their two sons. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in International Business Administration at Estonian Business School in Tallinn. In Estonia, she participated in the Dance and Song Festivals, held every five years in Tallinn. Through her school years, she belonged to a competitive, much lauded rhythmic dance group, which gave her  thirst for traveling and challenges. As a 21 year old, she came to the U.S. to learn English, gain experience and broaden her worldviews. Currently she is working for one of the world’s leading business consulting firms. At her job she has gained experience which became invaluable in helping to plan the LEP-ESTO, the great Estonian festival held in San Francisco in 2013. She is a board member of the San Francisco Estonian Society since 2009.
She played key roles in planning and managing the 2013 festival. She was Vice President of the organizing committee, and in charge of several festival functions. She was also responsible for hotel accommodations, finding sponsors and fundraising. Her vision for the functions she organized was to introduce Estonia and its culture to SF Bay Area general public. She believes her mission was successful.

 

In 2013, she started a new tradition within San Francisco Estonian Society by introducing the Christmas Fair to the local Estonian community. This event proved popular. She now wants to take the event to the next level and organize a Baltic Christmas Fair.

In 2014, a new web magazine (www.eestibythebay.org), run by the editor she personally appointed, has gotten a great start. In the long term, she is fully supportive of the idea to join the West Coast Estonian communities directly with Estonia and vice versa.

 

ÜLLE EDERMA

Residence: Montclair,  New Jersey
Born: 1933

 

Lõpetas Guilford College BS kraadiga õpetaja kutsega geoloogia ja teaduste alal. Täiendas ennast University of N.C at Boone.  Õpetas N.C. koolides 20 a., siirdus tagasi New Jerseysse 1983. a. ja töötas 12 aastat ühes erakoolis New Yorgis, olles ,,Science coordinator and  Upper School Science teacher”.  Praegu naudib pensionäri elu. On alati ühiskondliku töö vastu  huvi tundnud ja selles kaasa löönud. On aktiivne olnud Balti riikidega ühenduses olevatel poliitilistel aktsioonidel ja osalenud paljudel JBANC’i konverentsidel Washingtonis ja muudel üritustel.  Kuulub New Yorgi Haridusseltsi, oli selle juhatuses mitu aastat sekretäri/protokollijana; on Lakewoodi Eesti Ühingu liige ja osaleb Seabrooki Eesti Seltsi töös. Kuulub NY EELK’sse. Akadeemiliselt kuulub korp! Filiae Patriaesse, olles selle eestseisuses. On tegutsenud NYEHS Long Islandi Laste Suvekodus 1995. a. ja 2005-2008. a. On New Yorgi Meeskoori toetavliige. On aidanud kaasa EABS’i projektidele tuua noorsoojuhte Eestist, et nende silmaringi laiendada. On korraldanud Scanfestil Eestit tutvustavat näituse lauda mitmel aastal. On olnud ERKÜ Esinduskogu ja juhatuse liige 12 aastat.  Praegune ÜEKNi delegaat ja juhatuse liige.

 

Olen huvitatud eesti ühiskonna tööst, eestluse säilitamisest välismaal ja poliitiIise olukorra jälgimisest Eestis. Olen huvitatud Rahvuskomitee eesmärkide saavutamisest.  Sekretärina olen kirjutanud mitmeid ERKÜ’ga ühenduses olevaid artikleid Vaba Eesti Sõnas ja ka protokollinud koosolekuid. Olen sidet pidanud Eesti Koondisega Karoliinades, olles sealne piirkonna direktor.  Koosolekutel osalemist pean kohustuslikuks ja püüan alati kohal olla.

 

Graduated Guilford College and did postgraduate work at UNC-Boone.  Taught in N.C. public schools for 20 years, after which returned to N.J. in 1983.  Worked at Cathedral School of St. John the Divine in New York as a teacher and science coordinator for 12 years.  Presently  enjoys retirement.  Has always been interested in public service, especially in projects related to Estonia. Has participated actively in various political action groups, written hundreds of letters urging the US Congress to pass legislation supporting issues which dealt with freedom for Estonia; has attended several JBANC conferences in Washington  and other similar events.  Belongs to the NY Estonian Educational Society, having served on the Board as secretary for several years;  belongs to Lakewood Estonian Assoc. and participates in Seabrook Estonian Assoc. Is a member of NY EELK;  belongs to Filiae Patriae academic sorority, carrying out secretarial duties there.  Has actively participated in Long Island Children’s Camp, in 1995 and 2005-2008.  Has helped EABS when they have brought young leaders from Estonia to the U.S.  For several years, has exhibited Estonian handicrafts and literature at Scanfest.  Has been a member of EANC and served on the Board for 12 years, is a delegate and a Board member in  EWC.

 

I’m very interested in preserving Estonian culture, language and heritage outside of Estonia. I’m interested in following political events in Estonia.  I am interested in EANC ‘s goals and want to work toward  achieving these.  I have written minutes of meetings and I have also written articles pertaining to the work and events of the EANC.  I have also been in contact with Estonians in the Carolinas, carrying out duties of a Regional  Director of said region.   I feel that it is my duty to attend meetings and as a member, take an active part in the work of a given organization.

 

LEIF FRITZELL

Residence: Grand Forks, North Dakota
Born: 1982

 

I was born in Columbia, Missouri to an Estonian mother and a Scandinavian father in 1982. When I was 12 years old my family relocated to Corvallis, Oregon, where l subsequently received my Bachelors degree in European Studies from Oregon State University. In conjunction with completing my degree, in 2005 l participated in the University of Tartu’s Prometheus Program in Transition Studies. After living in Estonia, l moved to Vancouver, British Columbia where I received my Masters degree in European Studies from the University of British Columbia. At UBC, I focused my studies on Estonian and Latvian citizenship policies, Estonian nationalism and security, and Baltic “region-building “. I currently reside in Grand Forks, North Dakota, where I work as a reference librarian. In my spare time, l enjoy hunting, fishing, mushroom harvesting, Scandinavian/Finnic folklore and spending time with my good friends and family.  

 

I am renewing my candidacy for the Council because I believe my personal perspective would prove valuable to the Estonian-American community. In addition, as a young Estonian-American, I believe my presence on the Council would be beneficial, providing it with longevity and an intergenerational cohesion. Estonian-related issues have always been a passion of mine, so being reelected to the Council would be an opportunity I would very much welcome.

Kui olin 12-aastane, kolisime Corvallis, Oregoni, kus hiljem saavutasin bakalaureuse kraadi Oregoni Riiklikust Ülikoolist. Samaaegselt kraadi saavutamisega Oregonis õppisin 2005. a. Tartu Ülikoolis nn “Prometheus Program in Transition Studies”. Eestist lahkudes siirdusin Vancouver, BC’sse, kus ma saavutasin magistrikraadi Briti Columbia Ülikoolist. Mu õpingute rõhk oli Eesti ja Läti kodakondsuse poliitikal, Eesti rahvuslikkusel ja turvalisusel ja Balti  “piirkonna ehitusel”. Praegu  elan Grand Forks, North Dakotas, kus töötan teatme-raamatukoguhoidjana. Vabal ajal käin jahil, kalal, seenel, kuulan-loen skandinaavia-soome rahvapärimusi ja veedan aega heade sõprade ja perekonnaga.

 

Uuendan kandidaatuuri Esinduskokku, kuna arvan, et minu isiklik vaatenurk oleks väärtuslik eesti-ameerika kogukondadele. Samuti noore eesti-ameeriklasena usun, et minu kuuluvus Esinduskokku tooks sinna pikaajalist püsivust ja põlvkondadevahelist kooskõla. Eesti ja eestlusega seotu on alati olnud mu suur huvi ja kirg. Saada valitud Esinduskokku oleks mulle teretulnud võimalus.

Sündisin Philadelphia, PAs 1970. a. ja praegu elan Maple Valley, WAs koos abikaasa Jamie ja meie lastega. Haridus: 1993  bakalaureuse kraad ajaloo alal Drew Ülikoolist New Jerseys; 2005  magistrikraad telekommunikatsiooni alal, Temple Ülikoolist, Philadelphias. Kümme aastat töötasin Ameerika suuremate telefoni- ja internetifirmadega seaduste ja regulatsioonide nõustamise alal. Peale laste sündimist, Kaili (8 a.) ja Amelia (7 a.), olen täisajaga lapsevanem ja olen ennast sidunud mitmete kohalike vabatahtlike organisatsioonidega.

 

Olen eluaeg Eesti organisatsioonides ja kultuuriprogrammidest osalenud. Olin rahvatantsurühmades Lakewood New Jerseys, New Yorgis ja Washington DC’is. Noorena osalesin  Lakewoodi, New Yorgi ja Moorestown New Jersey Eesti täienduskoolides ja olin palju aastaid  Jõekääru Eesti Laste Suvekodu kasvandik (Kanadas). Osalesin ka USA Gaidide Linnutee Lipkonnas ja käisin Lakewoodi laagris. Olen esinenud paljudel Eesti Päevadel alates ESTO 1976.

 

I was born in Philadelphia , PA, in 1970 and currently live in Maple Valley, Washington, with my husband Jamie and our children.  Education: 1993 Bachelor’s degree in History, Drew University, New Jersey; 2005 master’s degree in telecommunications, Temple University, Philadelphia.  Professionally I worked for ten years with major American telephone and internet companies on regulatory issues.  After the birth of my children, Kaili (8) And Amelia (7), I have been a full- time parent and involved with a number of local volunteer organizations.
All my life I have participated in Estonian organizations and cultural programs. I was a member of folk dance groups in Lakewood, New Jersey, New York and Washington DC.  When I was younger, I attended Lakewood , New York, and Moorestown, New Jersey, Estonian schools, and for many years attended the Estonian Children’s Summer Home (Canada).  I also participated in the Estonian Girl Scouts USA (Linnutee Lipkond) and went to the Lakewood camp. I have performed at many Estonian Days, beginning with ESTO 1976.

 

Our Estonian-American community owes much to those tireless volunteers whose names are familiar to many of us and who have kept the Estonian-American community active all these years. These are the indefatigable members of our community who organize the events and address the issues that are important to all of us and have enhanced our lives in so many ways. Over the years these endeavors have often fallen to fewer and fewer people as we have become geographically dispersed from the traditional centers of Estonian-American life or are coping with ever increasing demands on our time. As an active volunteer in many organizations, I understand first hand how important participation and leadership is for success and would welcome the opportunity to put more of my volunteer time and efforts toward the benefit of the Estonian-American community by serving in ERKÜ on your behalf.

 

I advocate for an emphasis on broadening our virtual community to more cohesively support the mission of ERKÜ and all of the tireless volunteers as they do the work that benefits and enriches us all. According to the 2000 US Census, there are over 25,000 persons of Estonian ancestry living in the US, not to mention all the friends of the Estonian-American community. Reaching out to more of our fellow Estonian-Americans would help to include those who would like to be more active and knowledgeable participants in our community despite barriers of time, place and increasingly, age. We can continue to help preserve and promote our Estonian cultural heritage in the US and support Estonian interests more effectively by bringing us all together in conversation and spirit. This is particularly significant in times when we, as a community, need to speak as one.

Lõpetas Vassar College’i ja Chicago-Kent College of Law J.D.  Akadeemiliselt:  Korp! Indla. Praegu puhkepalgaline,  advokaat, diakonõpetaja Chicago Eesti kirikus ja vabatahtlik. Töötas ligi 35 aastat Ameerika põllumajandusministeeriumis  ja oli kesklääne rajooni kodanikuõiguste osakonna juhataja. Esinduskogu liige üle 30 aasta. Lakewoodi Eesti Ühingu ja Chicago Eesti Maja liige; Kesk Lääne Balti Koalitsiooni asutaja liige; Elulugu on olnud „Who’s Who“ raamatus. Talle on annetatud Eesti Vabariigi Valgetähe V klassi teenetemärk kui eestluse hoidjale USAs.  

 

Ma kandideerin, sest olen pühendanud suure osa oma elust „Eesti asjadele.“  Olin aktiivne Eesti vabadusvõitluses, NATO, ja EÜ kampaaniates. Õpetasin, kuidas tulemusrikkalt ajalehtedele lugejakirju kirjutada  ja oma valitud esindajatega kontakti pidada. Tutvustan ka edasi Eestit ja Eesti huvisid Ameerika ühiskonnas. Usun, et minu kogemused, teadmised, tegevus ja loovus on kasuks Ameerika eestlaskonnale ja selle tõttu palun, et mind valitakse tagasi ERKÜ liikmeks.

EANC member over 30 years. Lakewood Estonian Association and Chicago Estonian House member;  Midwest Baltic Coalition founding member; Biography has appeared in several Who’s Who listings. Received  Republic of Estonia’s 5th Class Order of the White Star for preserving Estonian heritage in America.

 

I am a candidate because I have dedicated most of my life to Estonian activities. I was active in advocating for Estonia’s independence and for membership in NATO and EU. I gave seminars on writing effective letters to newspapers and contacting elected representatives. I continue to advocate for Estonia and Estonian interests in America. I believe my experience, knowledge, activities, and creativity are an asset to Estonian-Americans and ask you to re-elect me to the EANC Council.

 

MIRJAM KRULL

Elanud USAs üle 13 aasta. Lõpetas American University arvutiteaduse alal ja omandas ka Georgetown University sertifikaadi mittetulundusühingute juhtimise erialal.  On töötanud 9 aastat firmas, mis nõustab mittetulundusühinguid. Suhtleb vabalt eesti ja inglise keeles, ka saab hakkama soome, vene ja hispaania keelega. On Washingtoni Eesti Seltsi esinaine. Õpetab Washingtoni Eesti täienduskoolis eesti keelt ja kultuuri. Vabal ajal teeb trenni, suusatab, keedab, naudib teatrilavastusi, reisib ja iga päev proovib sõita jalgrattal. Käib paar korda aastas Eestis.

 

ERKÜ Esinduskogus oleks mul võimalus laiendada oma praegust tegevust Washingtonis. Kuna ERKÜ tegevuspiirkond on üle terve Ameerika, siis saaks ma Eestit esindada laiemas mõõdus. Mul on kindel soov ERKÜ ja WESi vahelist koostööd süvendada ja teiste eesti orgaisatsioonidega suhteid luua. Lived in the US for over 13 years. Graduated from American U. with a BS in Computer Science and earned a Graduate Certificate in Nonprofit Management from Georgetown U. She is presently working for a consulting firm providing services to nonprofit organizations. Fluent in Estonian and English, and gets by in Finnish, Russian and Spanish. Currently Chairperson of the Washington Estonian Society (WES). She also teaches at the Washington Estonian Continuation School. Enjoys traveling, outdoor sports, theater, cooking and is committed to riding her bike to work every day. Visits Estonia several times a year.

 

As a member of the EANC Council, I would like to expand on the work that I am doing here in Washington, DC. While WES is a local organization, EANC would provide opportunities on a national scale. As a member, I would also look to deepen collaboration between WES and EANC. I am a candidate because I simply love everything about Estonia and am proud to represent my country.

 

KERSTI TOTSAS-LINASK

Saabusin Ameerikasse 4-a. lapsena ja kasvasin üles Albany/Schenectady eesti ühiskonnas. Ülikooliharidus: B.A., Russell Sage College; M.A., UCLA; Ph.D. in Molecular-/Cellular Developmental Biology, University of Pennsylvania (UPenn.). Alustasin oma akadeemilist karjääri UPenn. pediaatria osakonnas. Minu akadeemiline uurimisteekond on olnud südame arenguga seotud.  Olen kirjutanud artikleid, raamatu peatükke ja  organiseerinud konverentse. Tegutsen oma erialal ülemaailmselt, ka koostöös Eestiga. Praegu olen Professor of Translational Cardiology, University of South Florida.  2012 a. olin Fulbright külalisprofessor Tartu Ülikoolis. Olin abielus Dr. Jüri Linaskiga (†) ja mul on kaks tütart, kes räägivad eesti keelt.

 

Noorest saadik olen tundnud rõõmu olla eestlane. AlbanySchenectadys käisin täienduskoolis, tantsisin rahvatantsurühmas ning osalesin  naisvõimlemises, millega sai Lakewoodi Spordipäevadel esinetud. Olen tantsinud ka Los Angelese ja Lakewoodi rahvatantsutruppides. Olin Jõekääru laagris Kanadas kasvataja. Viisin oma lapsed täienduskooli, kus olin ise õpetajaks: Lakewoodi, New Yorki ja hiljem lõuna New Jersey’sse. Tegutsesin eesti gaidluses. Viimastel aastatel olen olnud ERKÜ esinduskogus ja tegutsen seal Strateegiakomitees. Esinduskogus aitasin arendada praegust estosite.org veebilehte, sihiga siduda ameerika eestlasi, et neil oleks kindel ja ajakohane info allikas. Olen ka tegutsenud Ülemaailmses Eesti Kesknõukogus (ÜEKN) ERKÜ saadikuna, esindades Austraaliat ÜEKN’is, ja tegutsenud Linna stipendiumi komitees. Olen Kesk Florida Eesti Seltsi juhatuses.

 

Kandideerin veelkord esinduskokku, et aidata kindlustada eestluse tulevikku Ameerikas. Olen juba aastaid olnud aktiivne ERKÜ Esinduskogu liige ja leian, et lähedalolevad aastad on kriitilised meie tegevuses. On vaja olla toeks Eestile, aga ka leida ja arendada uusi sihte USAs, et siin eestlust üleval hoida ja nooremat generatsiooni kaasa tõmmata, et järgmine sugupõlv saaks võtta neile pärandatud kohustused täielikult enda kätte.

 

As a four-year old, I arrived in the U.S. with my parents and brothers and grew up in the Albany/Schenectady (AS) area. My education includes a B.A. from Russell Sage College; M.A. in developmental biology from UCLA; and a Ph.D. in cellular-molecular biology from the University of Pennsylvania. I began my academic research career at the University of Pennsylvania in the Department of Pediatrics. Currently I am an endowed professor at the University of South Florida in the College of Medicine.  In the fall of 2012 I was a Fulbright Visiting Professor at Tartu University. I was married to the late Dr. Jüri Linask and have two daughters, both of whom speak Estonian.

 

I have always been proud and happy to be Estonian. In Albany-Schenectady, I belonged to Estonian folk dance group and took part in the Estonian women’s rhythmic gymnastics. We performed many times at the Lakewood Sports Festival. For years I was also a teacher at Estonian continuation schools in New York City, Lakewood, and in Southern New Jersey.  I was active in the Estonian Girl Scouts. In the last eight years I have been a member of the EANC and serve on its Strategy Committee. I was instrumental in setting up the EANC website with the goal of keeping the Estonian American community, as well as Estonians of the homeland, informed about our activities, to help tie us together in a world-wide Estonian community. I have also served on the Estonian World Council (ÜEKN) and on its Linna Scholarship Committee.

 

Presently I serve on the Central Florida Estonian Society’s board.

 

I am a candidate for EANC with a focus on helping to maintain Estonian-American activities for our future generations.  I would like to help to broaden our base in the United States and encompass those individuals who have an interest in Estonia, but may not speak the language. I believe we are approaching critical years for maintaining our culture outside of Estonia.  In the U.S. we must continue to be vigilant and speak out for Estonian’s interests, especially at a time that we see what is happening in the Ukraine. To protect these interests, we need to bring back more active young people to the EANC fold to take over from the previous generation and to continue carrying out the stated mission of preserving our culture in the US and helping to protect Estonia’s independence.

 

MAIA LINASK

Haridus: 1995. a. bakalaureuse kraad ajaloo ja kirjanduse alal Harvardi Ülikoolist; 2005. a. magistrikraad rahvusvaheliste suhete alal Johns Hopkins Ülikoolist Washingtonis; 2012. a. doktorikraad majanduse alal Johns Hopkins Ülikoolist Baltimores.  Praegu õpetab majanduse osakonnas University of Richmondis. Osalenud mitmel pool eestlaste organisatioonide tegevuses, m.h. Connecticuti rahvatantsurühmas Jaanik, Washingtoni rahvatantsurühmas Pillerkaar ja Connecticuti Eesti Seltsis.  2010 aastast saadik olnud ERKÜ esinduskogu liige ja 2012 aastast saadik ERKÜ juhatuse liige.  ERKÜ ja ÜEKNi revisjonikomisjonide liige.

 

Tahan ERKÜs edasi esindada noorema põlvkonna vaateid ja vajadusi. Pean vajalikuks, et ERKÜ toetaks Ameerika eestlaste organisatsioonide tegevust ja koostööd ning aitaks arendada suhteid Eestiga, ja seon ennast nende eesmärkidega. Maia Kersti Linask was born on May 26, 1973 in Connecticut and currently resides in Richmond, VA.  She earned her B.A. in history and literature from Harvard University in 1995, her M.A. in international relations from Johns Hopkins University (SAIS) in 2005, and her Ph.D. in economics from Johns Hopkins University in 2012.   She is an Assistant Professor of Economics at the University of Richmond.  She has previously been an active member of many Estonian organizations, including the Connecticut folkdance group Jaanik, the Washington folkdance group Pillerkaar, and the Connecticut Estonian Society.  She has been a representative to the Estonian American National Council (EANC) since 2010 and a Board member since 2012.  She is also a member of the internal audit committee for both the EANC and the Estonian World Council, Inc.

 

I would like to continue to represent the needs and perspectives of younger generations as an EANC member.  I wish to continue to actively work toward EANC’s goals of supporting the activities and interaction of Estonian American organizations and strengthening ties with Estonia. I would like to carry on with the work of inviting all Estonian-Americans and Estophiles to participate in their local organizations, EANC, and the Estonian community in general.

 

REIN LUNING

Sündinud Tartus. Elanud USA-s 1950. aastast saadik. Kasvanud üles New Yorgi piirkonnas. Olnud esimees Üliõpilaskonnas ja Klubis Estonia. Toimetanud “Nimeta” ajakirja. Endine ERKÜ liige. Abiellunud Torontos  Anne Onuga. Kahe lapse isa. Elanud 2 aastat Austraalias. Naasnud USA-sse, elab Boca Raton, Floridas. Omanud mitmeid firmasid viimase 35 a. jooksul.

 

Kandideerin, et kindlustada eesti kultuuri ja ühiskonna püsivus Põhja-Ameerikas. Kui elasin New Yorgi piirkonnas, organiseerisin eestlaste suusapäevi, Long Islandi Eesti Küla spordipäevi, olin N.Y. kultuuripäevade korraldavas toimkonnas. Sel aastal organiseerin KLENK-IEP 2015 Merereisi. Sellel osalevad  meeskoorid Eestist ja rohkem kui 400 eestlast üle maailma.

Grew up in the New York area.  Was president of the Estonian University Student Association and Club Estonia.  Active in establishing Kultuuri Päevad, Suusapäevad and Sportipäevad on Long Island. Was an editor for the ‘Nimetu’ magazine. Previously a member of EANC. Have owned many and still own several active technology companies.

 

I am a candidate since I have an interest in promulgating and advancing Estonian culture in North America. To carry this out, I am presently organizing KLENK-IEP 2015, a 7 day cruise with emphasis on Estonian culture. This event will feature concerts by choirs from Estonia. To date, over 400 Estonians  from 8 different countries have booked for the cruise.

 

EPP MEISNER

Olen sündinud, kasvanud ja keskkoolihariduse saanud Tartus, pärast Kunstiinstituudi lõpetamist Tallinnas tõi mind teekond Washingtoni. Siin olen õpetanud eesti keelt ja kultuuri ameerika diplomaatidele, sealhulgas suursaadik Melissa Wells’ile. Praegu töötan nii sisearhitektina kui ka kunsti ja disaini professorina kõrgkoolides.

 

Olen elanud Ameerika Ühendriikides mitmeid aastaid ja jõudnud etapini, kus soovin anda oma panuse eestiameerika ühiskonna jaoks. Eestlus on minu jaoks tähtis ja seega nii selle riigi, inimeste kui ka kultuuri säilitamine oluline.

 

Olen olnud ERKÜ XX esinduskogu liige.

 

I was born, grew up and finished high school in Tartu, then received an advanced degree in art at the Tallinn Art Institute.  After graduation I moved to Washington.  Here, I have taught Estonian language and culture to American diplomats, including Ambassador Melissa Wells. Currently, I work as an interior designer as well as a professor of art and design.

 

I have lived in the USA for many years and have reached the point where I want to contribute to the Estonian-American community.  Being an Estonian is important to me, and thus also is the preservation of this country, its people and its culture. I have been an active member of EANC’s XX Council.

 

MATI OTSMAA
Residence: Orinda, California
Born: 1951

 

Mati Otsmaa sündis Los Angeleses. Ta osales peaaegu igas tegutsevas Los Angelese eesti noorte organisatsioonis ja lõpetas LA Eesti Kooli, osales LA Lääneranniku Eesti Päevadel (LEP) ja poliitilistes organisatsioonides, toetades vabadust Eestile. Mati lõpetas University of Southern California MBA kraadiga International Business & Marketing alal ja asus New Yorki, kus asutas oma firma. New Yorgis oslaes Mati aktiivselt eestlaste tegevuses: ühines meeskoori- ning teatri trupiga.

 

Tagasi Läänekaldal, seekord San Francisco piirkonnas, organiseeris Mati  SF Eesti Täienduskooli, ühines rahvatantsutrupiga ja oli mitmeid aastaid SF Eesti Seltsi esimees. Ta oli Eesti Organisatsioonide Liidu Läänerannikul (EOLL) president ja 1991 a. SF LEP korraldava komitee esimees. Ta oli ka nõunik 2013 a. LEP-ESTO suurüritusel San Franciscos, millest võttis osa ligi 900 pidulist. Mati on abielus, kahe lapse isa. Akadeemiliselt kuulub ta Korp! Vironiasse. Olnud General Manager mitmes firmas. Talle kuulub firma Market Direct Inc., mis tegeleb Eesti startup firmadega ja suurfirmade krediitkaartide turustamisega Ühendriikides, Inglismaal ja Koreas.

 

Arvan, et aeg on käes Lääneranniku eestlastel aktiivsemalt osa võtta ERKÜ tegevusest, edutades vabadust ja eestlaste sotsiaalpoliitilisi huve USA-s ja ärinduse aluseid maailma ulatuses. Olen eestlusele kaasa aidanud San Francisos, New Yorgis ja Los Angeleses. Olles eesti-ameeriklane ja Lääneranniku eestlane, ma rõõmuga esitan oma kandidatuuri.

 

Mati Otsmaa was born and grew up in Los Angeles. He joined most Estonian organizations in LA in his time; graduated LA Estonian School; participated in several West Coast Estonian Days; and supported various political organizations for the freedom for Estonia. Mati earned his MBA in Multinational Business and Marketing from the University of Southern California and thereafter moved to New York, where he began his career in advertising. While in NY, Mati participated in many cultural and political Estonian activities and joined the NY Estonian Men’s Choir. Moving back to California, this time to San Francisco, Mati re-established the SF Estonian School and Folk Dance group, and was elected president of the SF Estonian Society. He was president of EOLL and headed the organizing committee for the 1991 SF West Coast Estonian Days. Mati is married and the father of two. He belongs to Estonian fraternity Vironia.

 

He has been General Manager of five different firms. He owns his own company, Market Direct Inc., which specializes in helping Estonian startups and consulting major credit card companies in the U.S., U.K. and Korea.

 

I am a candidate in that I believe it is time that “West Coast Estonians take a more active role in EANC to advance freedom and Estonians’ social, political and educational base throughout the world”. I have pledged most of my life to work for the Estonian cause, whether be it in San Francisco, New York or Los Angeles.  As an Estonian American and West Coast Estonian, “I am very honored to submit my candidacy to the EANC”.

 

MATTI PRIMA

Sündisin Lakewoodis eesti vanematele, kasvades eesti keelt rääkivas kodus. Olen lõpetanud Pepperdine Ülikooli magistrikraadiga majanduses ja panganduses ning olen töötanud aastaid nendel aladel.  Töötan nüüd firmas abipresidendina, analüüsides firmade olukorda, et aidata neil lahendada probleeme ja kasvada. Varem olin valitud koolikomitee (Board of Education) liikmeks West Windsor, N.J.’s ja olin nende pealäbirääkija kooliõpetajate ühinguga (New Jersey Education Association). Minu nimi esineb mitmes “Who’s Who” väljaandes.

 

Sooviks säilitada eesti ühiskonna kultuuripärandit ERKÜ kaudu.  Minu inspiratsioon tuleb minu isa ja mõlema vanaisa kaudu, kes pühendasid enamuse oma vabast ajast, püüdes saavutada kõik mis võimalik eestluse heaks. Olen aktiivne olnud Eesti ühiskonnas ja sooviksin, et see võimalus püsiks nii mul kui meie järeltulijatel. Olen lõpetanud Lakewoodi Eesti Kooli, osa võtnud skautlusest, saavutanud eluaegse skautluse taseme, olnud hundukarja juht, kauaaegne rahvatantsutrupi liige ja esinenud rahvatantsuga paljudel eesti üritustel ning tutvustanud rahvatantse ka ameeriklastele. Olen abistanud paljudel üritustel Lakewoodi Eesti Majas ning mujal. Osalesin R.A.K.S. rahvatantsulaagris Torontos, osalesin EstDocs dokumentaalfilmifestivalil Torontos ning osalesin Lääneranniku Eesti Päevadel Portlandis ja San Franciscos.  Hiljuti toetasin ukrainlasi, osaledes  meeleavaldusel Vene okupatsiooni vastu.

 

Mul oleks ülimalt hea meel, kui mul saab olema au valitud sellisesse väärtuslikku organisatsiooni. Usun, et mul on sobivad omadused Esinduskogu liikmeks olla, kuna tunnen uhkust Eesti päritolu üle, olen tegev olnud eesti ühiskonnas, olen eestvedaja ja motiveeritud inimene ning mul on kasulikke töökogemusi, lisaks  on mul  rahulik, tasakaalukas ja rõõmus iseloom. Minu südamesoov on aidata ERKÜ-l säilitada eesti kultuuripärandit, eriti emakeelt, aidata eesti noorust ja arendada nende tegevust. Kuna mul on rohkel määral kogemusi poliitiliste agentuuridega Ameerikas, on mul võimalus Ameerika eestlaste huvisid hästi esindada Ameerika valitsuse juures.

 

Born in Lakewood, NJ to Estonian parents. At home, we spoke Estonian.  My background was in finance, having been a banker for many years but have since converted to operations and sales management, helping companies grow or turnaround from distressed situations. I have an MBA from Pepperdine University. I was elected to the School Board in West Windsor, NJ and was their lead negotiater vis a vis the New Jersey Education Association (Teachers Union). Moreover, I was appointed chairman of the Princeton Junction Parking Authority, the third largest parking authority in New Jersey. My background has been published in Who’s Who in Colleges and Universities and Corporate Executives in America.

 

My inspiration to become a member of this Council stems from the works of my father and my two grandfathers, who worked indefatigably to sustain Estonian cultural heritage in America.  This influence, coupled with having more time to fully dedicate myself to the good works of this Council, I would be honored to receive your support to become a member of this committee.
My involvement with Estonian activities ranged from the completion of Estonian Continuation School; Estonian Scouts (having achieved the level of Life-Scout), as Cub Scout Leader, as folk dance troupe member, having performed with the troupe in various parts of the country and in Toronto. In 2012, I participated in R.A.K.S. folk dance camp in Toronto. I was an active participant in the West Coast Estonian Festivals in Portland 2011 and San Francisco 2013. Most recently, I participated in the Ukrainian Rally to show Baltic solidarity with Ukraine over Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea.  

 

I would like to accomplish two objectives in a very meaningful way, further promote the good works of the Council as it relates to furthering the Estonian culture and language, by supporting Estonian youth, young adults and young families. And, with the current environment of the Russian and Ukrainian situation, I believe that many of my skills along with experience having worked with political agencies thoroughout the United States, I could provide some additional benefit in getting the Council’s message across to the legislature in Washington D.C.

 

ERIK PUSKAR

Residence: Rockville, MD
Date of Birth: June 17, 1959

 

Sündisin 1959. aastal Philadelphias ja kasvasin üles New Jersey osariigis. Käisin New Yorgi eesti koolis ja võtsin osa skautlusest ja teistest eesti noorte tegevustest. Lõpetasin Rutgers’i ülikooli majandusteaduse alal ja Carnegi-Mellon ülikooli magistrikraadiga “Management and Public Policy” alal.  Akadeemiliselt kuulun Korp! Rotaliasse. Olen abielus ja nelja lapse isa.

 

Töötan  praegu majandusteadlasena National Institute of Standards & Technology juures. Varem töötasin ka teiste riiklike asutuste, erafirmade ja rahvusvaheliste organisatsioonide juures. Maailmapangas töötades elasin Budapestis ja Jamaical. Peale välismaalt tagasitulekut hakkasin jälle eesti asjadega tegelema. 2006. a. olin ERKÜ esindaja  Joint Baltic American National Committee (JBANC) juures, kus taotletakse Balti poliitilisi eesmärke. Olen  praegu ERKÜ laekur ja samuti kauaaegne Eesti-Ameerika Fondi juhatuse liige. Olen aktiivselt osalenud eesti tegevuses terve eluaja. Näiteks olen viimased 8 aastat ERKÜ juhatuses ja enne seda olin JBANCi juhatuse liige. Osalen ka Maryland Estonian Exchange Nõukogus, mis aitab luua linnadevahelisi sidemeid Eesti ja Marylandi  osariigi vahel, ja olen Long Islandi Eesti Küla ja Washingtoni Eesti Seltsi liige.

 

Tunnen tugevalt, et olen eestlane ja kuulun eesti ühiskonda ning soovin, et eestlased ja eesti organisatsioonid siin Ameerikas jõuliselt edasi elaksid. Ühinedes ERKÜga on mul võimalik kursis olla eestlaste tegevustega USAs ja seal nõu ja jõuga kaasa rääkida.

 

Born in Philadelphia and raised in NJ. I was active during most of my childhood in Estonian activities in the NY/NJ area such as scouting, the camps in Lakewood and Long Island and am a graduate of the NY Estonian Continuation School. Attended Rutgers University, graduated with a degree in economics and received a Masters degree from Carnegie Mellon University in Management & Public Policy. I am a member of the Estonian fraternity Korp. Rotalia, in which I am still active today.

 

I am employed as an economist at the National Institute of Standards & Technology. Previously worked as a consultant for international organizations which allowed our family to live overseas for 5 years and experience other cultures.  After returning from our expat adventure, I reengaged with Estonian-American community and began to get involved with several organizations including the Estonian-American Fund, the Joint Baltic American National Committee (JBANC) and beginning in 2006 with the Estonian American National Council (EANC).  I have been on the EANC Board for the past 8 years, having served as Treasurer for 7 of them.  I try to balance this effort with the daily requirements of family responsibilities which has included bringing our kids to both typical American extracurricular activities as well as Estonian ones such as Baltimore Estonian School, L.I. Suvekodu, girl guides, and the annual Spordipäev in Lakewood.  We have taken several visits to Estonia with the entire family which are always enjoyable and an inspiration to continue to stay involved with “eestlus”.  

 

I have a strong connection to my Estonian heritage and wish to see our Estonian-American community and organizations continue to thrive.  Joining the EANC Council is a way to be able to have a view into all of the different activities around the U.S. as it helps provide information, guidance and support to the Estonian communities. I am also currently active in a newer organization, called the Maryland Estonian Exchange Council, which promotes ties between Estonia and Maryland.  My family and I also continue to partake in various activities such as the Lutheran church confirmation camps and Estonian Sports League events. We are members of L.I Estonian Society (Eesti Küla) and the Washington Estonian Society.

 

AAVO REINFELDT

Olen sündinud Bridgeton, New Jersey’s. Lõpetasin Lynchburg Kolledzi Virginias BA kraadiga politoloogias. Õppisin edasi Drexel Ülikoolis MBA kraadi taotlemiseks. Töötasin panganduse alal, tõustes karjääriredelil  kuni panga vanema abipresidendini. Olen abielus, kolme lapse isa. Hiljuti läksin puhkepalgale. Oman ka Eesti passi, käies tihti Eestis.

 

Soovin aktiivselt töötada eesti ühiskonna heaks Ameerikas. Olen aidanud kaasa nii Lakewoodi kui New Yorgi eestlaste tegevustel. Olen tegelenud eesti skautluses. Olen töötanud Eesti aukonsulitega New Yorgis, Chicagos ja Los Angeleses. Olles puhkepalgal, on mul aega, energiat ja majanduslikku kandepinda, et ERKÜ Esinduskogus töötada eestluse hüvanguks USA-s.

 

I was born in Bridgeton, New Jersey. I received my undergraduate degree from Lynchburg College,Va, and graduate studies at Drexel University and the American Institute of Banking. I spent my entire career in banking, rising to the level of Executive Vice President; I recently retired. I am married with 3 children. I have an Estonian passport, since I travel frequently to Estonia.

 

I wish to actively work for the benefit of the Estonian community in America. I have assisted with activities in Lakewood and New York. I have participated in scouting.  I have worked closely with the Estonian Honorary Consuls in New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles. Now that I am retired, I have more time, energy and financial resources to devote to EANC’s work.

 

MARJU RINK-ABEL

Residence:  Kensington, Maryland
Born: 1948

 

Sündisin Geislingenis, Saksamaal. Lapsepõlve veetsin Wilmingtonis, Delaware-is. Oman magistrikraade Columbia ja Marylandi ülikoolidest. Pärast kolimist Washingtoni 1974. a., töötasin USA Riigikontrolli Ametis 33 aastat, viimati olin vastutav Riigikontrolli Ameti enda sisekontrolli eest.

 

Olen kaua tegelenud organiseeritud eestlusega. Olin Washingtoni Eesti Seltsi juhatuses 1980-88, sellest viis aastat esimehena. Olen olnud 25 aastat Eesti Rahvuskomitee Ühendriikides esinduskogu liige, nendest 12  aastat juhatuses abiesimees ja laekur ja viimased kaheksa aastat esimees. Esindan ERKÜ-d Ülemaailmse Eesti Kesknõukogu ja Ühendatud Balti Ameerika Komitee juhatustes ja ka Kesk- ja Ida Euroopa Koalitsioonis Washingtonis.

 

Eestluse hoidjana Ameerika Ühendriikides pälvisin V klassi Eesti Valgetähe teenetemärgi a. 2004.

 

Olen ERKÜ esimehena viimase 8 aasta jooksul loonud tugevaid sidemeid mitme organisatsiooniga ja ka Eesti Saatkonnaga Washingtonis, mida saab kasutada ERKÜ poliitilises tegevuses, eriti nüüd kui Vene oht jälle ähvardab Kesk- ja Ida Euroopat. Loodan arendada samme, mida oleme võtnud ERKÜ tutvustamiseks ja informatsiooni jagamiseks Ameerika eestlaste ringkondades. Kavatsen osaleda ERKÜ arutlustes ja plaanides uuema põlvkonna ja Eestist tulnud inimeste kaasamiseks Ameerika eestlaste tegevusesse, ka eesti keele ja kultuuri säilitamiseks USAs. Olen esindanud ERKÜ-d ja Ameerika eestlasi üritustel, koosolekutel, demonstratsioonidel ja mujal, esile tõstnud meie sihte ja saavutusi.  Loodan seda ka edasipidi teha, kui olen valitud.

 

I was born in Geislingen, Germany and grew up in Wilmington, Delaware.  I have master’s degrees from Columbia University and the University of Maryland.  After moving to Washington in 1974, I worked for the Government Accountability Office for 33 years, most recently directing its own internal audits.

 

I have been involved in Estonian American activities for some time.  I was on the board of the Washington Estonian Society from 1980-88, five years as president.  I have been a member of EANC for 25 years, 12 as vice president and secretary, the last eight as president.  I represent EANC on the boards of the Estonian World Council, Joint Baltic American National Committee, and Central and East European Coalition in Washington.  In 2004 I received the Estonian Order of the White Star, V class, for sustaining Estonian heritage in the U.S.

 

As EANC president I have established strong contacts with organizations, and also the Estonian Embassy in Washington, that can be used in EANC’s political work, especially now that Russia again threatens Central and Eastern Europe.  I hope to build on steps that we have taken to introduce EANC and its activities and to disseminate information to Estonian American communities.  I intend to participate in discussions and plans to involve our younger generations and those more recently arriving from Estonia in Estonian American activities, as well as ways to maintain Estonian language and culture.  I have represented EANC and Estonian Americans at events, meetings, demonstrations, and elsewhere, discussing our goals and accomplishments.  I plan to continue to do so, if elected.

 

ANDRES SIMONSON

Residence:  Red Bank, New Jersey
Born: 1973

 

Andres lives in Red Bank, New Jersey with his wife and three children.  He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Science and a Masters of City and Regional Planning, concentrating in Environmental and Physical Planning.  Currently, he works as an environmental consultant and senior project manager for a national engineering firm.  He is a Trustee for the American Littoral Society, a coastal habitat advocacy group.  An avid writer, when time allows Andres writes in various online news websites and blogs.

 

I am quite familiar with the work of the EANC, having spent many years watching and learning from my father in his various roles with the organization.  With the fall of the Iron Curtain, some may have argued that the work of the EANC was fait accompli.  However, there is much work to be done – especially considering recent events in Eastern Europe.  I would like do do my part in furthering the EANC mission.
Although I am first generation American, I have been involved in Estonian activities from a very young age.  From Saturdays spent at Lakewoodi Eesti Kool, to summers at Suvekodu in Long Island or Skaut Laager in Jackson, the culture was ingrained.  I am a long time member of both the Lakewood Estonian Association and the Lakewood Estonian Lutheran Church.  I currently am an Officer on the Church Board.  Lastly, I periodically write for Estonian World, an online English language webzine specializing in global Estonian issues.

 

Andres elab koos naise ja kolme lapsega Red Bank, New Jerseys. Tal on bakalaureuse kraad keskkonnateaduse alal ja magistrikraad linna ja regioonide planeerimises, rõhuga keskkonnal ja füüsilisel projekteerimisel. Praegu töötab keskkonnanõustajana ning vanema projekteerimisjuhina ülemaalises insenerifirmas. Ta Ameerika Litoraalühingu volinik, mis on üks rannikuvööndi kaitsegrupp. Andres on äge kirjutaja, kui aeg lubab, kirjutades mitmes veebi uudistelehes ja blogides.

 

Olen isa kaudu tuttav ERKÜ tööga, olles jälginud ja õppinud ta mitmetest rollidest selles organisatsioonis. Raudse eesriide kukkumise järel on paljud arvanud, et ERKÜ on fait accompli. Siiski, palju tööd on veel  teha, eriti vaadates Ida-Euroopas juhtuvat. Soovin anda oma panuse ERKÜ missiooni.

 

Olles esimese põlvkonna ameeriklane, olen tegelenud eesti asjadega väga noorest peale. Laupäevad veedetud eesti koolis, suved Eesti Külas Long Islandil, skautlaagrid Jacksonis – nii sai eesti kultuur minus põlistatuks. Olen kauaaegne Lakewoodi Eesti Seltsi liige, samuti kuulun Lakewoodi Eesti Luteri Kirikusse, kus olen nõukogu liige. Lõpetuseks, kirjutan aegajalt Estonian World’ile, mis on üks ingliskeelne veebileht pühendet globaalse eestluse temaatikale.

 

ALVAR SOOSAAR

Residence: Narberth, Pennsylvania
Born: 1974

 

Sündisin Bostonis, vanemad on Keto Soosaar ja Reet Juhkam Soosaar. Lõpetasin Virginia Ülikooli prantsuse keele ja poliitika aladel.

 

Järgnes magistrikraad finants- ja ärialal Oxfordi Ülikoolist Inglismaal. Töötasin ajakirjanikuna kaks aastat, enne kui läksin tööle investeerimise maailma, kus töötan senini. Elan Philadelphias abikaasa Jenniferiga, tütar Aurora ja poeg Sebastianiga. Olen alati olnud aktiivne eestluses. Lõpetasin eesti täienduskooli, tantsisin rahvatantsu ja istusin hea meelega minu vanemate ja nende külalistega söögilauas, kus arutati Eesti ja eestluse asju.

 

Akadeemiliselt kuulun Korp! Rotaliasse. Olen mitmel korral osalenud Metsaülikoolis. Kui elasin Bermudas, otsisin üles teisi eestlasi (meid oli neli täiskasvanut) ja me tegime aegajalt “Emakeelepäevi”. Dublinis, Iirimaal, olin aktiivne osa grupist, kes pani aluse Iiri-Eestlaste mudilasringile, millest kujunes Dublini Eesti Kool. Tagasi USAs, tõin oma lapsed New Yorgi Eesti Kooli ja ise õpetasin üht klassi. Hiljuti Philadelphias olen teiste kaasmaalastega organiseerimas eesti seltsi ja kooli. Tuleme kokku  vabariigi aastapäevaks, jaanipäevaks ja jõuludeks. Proovime ka mõnda saunaõhtut organiseerida! Olen ERKÜ investeeringu/finantskomitee liige.

 

I was born in Boston to Keto and Reet Juhkam Soosaar. Received my BA in Political Science and French studies at the University of Virginia and my MBA from the University of Oxford in the UK. Worked as a journalist for two years before shifting to the investment world, where I have been ever since. I reside in Philadelphia with my wife Jennifer, daughter Aurora and son Sebastian.  I have always participated in Estonian activities, having attended and graduated from Estonian Continuation School in Boston, danced in the folk dancing group, and sat around my parents’ table as Estonian issues of the day were being discussed.

 

Academically I belong to Estonian Fraternity Rotalia. I have attended Metsaülikool on many occasions. I became more active in Bermuda, and sought out the other three Estonian-Bermudians for periodic get-togethers, and then in Dublin, where I was part of the core group of Estonians that had a monthly Estonian playdate – this eventually grew into the Dublin Estonian School. Upon returning to the U.S., I enrolled my children at the New York Estonian School, where I also taught a class. Lately I joined with other Estonian parents to start our own Estonian school in the Philadelphia area, as well as organizing get-togethers for Estonian Independence Day, midsummer festival Jaanipäev and Christmas.  I am a member of the investment and finance committee at ERKÜ.

 

AINI STEPHENS

Residence: Orlando, Florida
Born: 1965

 

I was born and grew up in Estonia. I have a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Tartu. In Estonia I worked as a Senior Accountant in the banking industry.

 

In 1996 I met my future husband and in 1998 I moved with my son Kristjan to the U.S. I continued my education in America, obtained a master’s degree in accounting and became a Certified Public Accountant.

 

I am very proud of my Estonian heritage. I am a member of the Estonian Society of Central Florida.

 

I feel it is paramount to represent the interests of Estonian Americans, to promote and support our Estonian cultural heritage, and to raise awareness at the national and local level of our country’s achievements and challenges.

 

I am applying for EANC candidacy because I want to be more involved in my Estonian American community. I enjoy traveling, gourmet baking, painting in watercolor and practicing yoga in my spare time.

 

Sündisin Eestis. Lõpetasin Tartu Ülikooli bakalauruse kraadiga. Töötasin Eestis vanemraamatupidajana panganduses.

 

1996. a. kohtasin oma tulevast abikaasat ja kaks aastat hiljem kolisin oma poja Kristjaniga Ameerikasse.

 

Siin saavutasin magistrikraadi raamatupidamises ja peale eksamit olen Certified Public Accountant. Olen uhke oma eesti päritolule. Olen Kesk-Florida Eesti Seltsi liige.

 

Leian, et on tähtis esindada eestlasi Ameerikas, sealjuures toetada, edendada ja tutvustada eesti kultuuri.

 

Nende eesmärkide saavutamiseks kandideerin ERKÜ Esinduskokku. Meelelahutuseks reisin, küpsetan, maalin vesivärvidega ning harrastan joogat.

 

ERIC SUUBERG

Residence: Barrington, Rhode Island
Born: 1951

 

Eric Suuberg sündis 1951. a. New Yorgis. Ta on praegu Browni ülikooli professor. On lõpetanud Massachusetts Institute of Technology doktorikraadiga keemiainseneri ja magistrikraadiga majandusteaduste alal. Kuulub akadeemiliselt Korp! Sakalasse. Eric Suuberg on rahvusvaheliselt tuntud spetsialist kütuste keemia ja tehnoloogia ning energiamajanduse ja keskkonnakaitse aladel. Tal on kauaaegsed, tihedad ja tulemusrikkad sidemed Tallinna Tehnikaülikooliga: Kolm TTÜ lõpetanud inseneri on tema juhendamisel edukalt läbinud Browni ülikooli doktorantuuri; tal on ühisuuringud TTÜ keemiatehnika instituudi keemiatehnika õppetooli teadlastega; oli 2001. a. pool aastat külalisprofessorina TTÜ-s (Fulbright’i programmi raames); ja on ERKÜ juhatuse liikmena korraldanud stipendiumide andmist Eesti ülikoolide õpilastele.

 

Kandideerin taas Esinduskogusse, kuna tunnen Ameerika eestlasena seda isikliku kohustusena. Olen teeninud ERKÜ’t viimastel aastatel aseesimehena ja juhatuse liikmena. ERKÜ täidab olulist rolli välis- ja ka kodueestlaste jaoks; ta on peamine organisatsioon, kelle poole USAs pöördutakse Eesti riigi, rahva ja ta olude selgitamiseks. Samal ajal on ERKÜ’l oluline roll ka kodu-Eestiga sidemete pidamises, kas haridus- või kultuurilisel alal, millise tegevusega on võimalik nii meie USA eestluse tunnet säilitada või tugevdada ja ka meie kultuuri teistele tutvustada.

Eric Suuberg was born in 1951 in New York City. He is presently a Professor at Brown University. He graduated from Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a doctorate in chemical engineering and a masters in business management. He is a member of the fraternity Korp! Sakala. Eric Suuberg is an international authority on fuels chemistry and technology, as well as in energy industry and environmental topics. He has had a longstanding productive relationship with Tallinn University of Technology (TTÜ): three graduates of that institution have subsequently obtained their doctorates in the US under his supervision at Brown U. He is also engaged in joint research with TTÜ faculty based in the chemical technology institute; in 2001 he was a visiting faculty member at TTÜ (under Fulbright Scholars program); he has also, as a member of the EANC Board of Directors, played a role in establishing scholarships for students at Estonian universities.

 

I am standing for election to the EANC, feeling this to be an obligation as an Estonian-American. I have served the EANC for the last several years as its vice president and a member of its Board of Directors. The EANC fulfills an important role for both Estonian-Americans and for Estonia. The EANC is the principal organization to whom those in the US turn for information regarding the Estonian people, their nation and their current situation.   At the same time, the EANC has a critical role in maintaining contact with Estonia, whether in educational or cultural spheres, through which activity we can support the maintaining and strengthening of our constituency’s Estonian-American identity as well as introducing our culture to non-Estonians.

 

TOOMAS TUBALKAIN

Residence: Mantua, Ohio
Born: 1950

 

Born in Sweden, emigrated to Cleveland, Ohio, in 1955.
Academic: BA, Kent State.  Master of Library Science, University of Oregon.

 

Past President of Estonian Cultural Garden in Cleveland, OH; Baltic American Committee of Cleveland; Baltic Youth Congress and a member of the Cleveland EELK (Estonian Ev. Lutheran Church). I am retired from working as a project manager for the US Department of Defense.
I am the coordinator of the Cleveland Ohio Jõulupuu (Christmas Party) and work with the Cultural Gardens to organize the annual Võidupüha/Jaanipäev celebration at the Estonian Cultural Garden in Cleveland. I want to work with the EANC Council to support the interests of my community here in northern Ohio.  I am particularly interested in increasing outreach to the recent Estonian immigrants who often feel left out of our activities.

Endine Eesti Kultuuriaia president Clevelandis. Kuulub Balti Ameerika Komiteesse  Clevelandis, samuti liige Clevelandi EELK’s ja varem Balti Noorte Kongressis. Töötas enne erru minekut US kaitseministeeriumis juhtival kohal.

 

Koordineerin Clevelandi eesti jõulupidu ja organiseerin Eesti Kultuuriaias Võidupüha ja Jaa-nipäeva. Soovin töötada ERKÜ Esinduskogus, toetamaks eesti kogukonda siin Põhja-Ohios. Olen eriti huvitet pakkuma abistavat kätt hiljuti Eestist saabunuile, kes tihti tunnevad, et nad on kõrvale jäetud meie tegevustest.

 

TIINA URV

Born: 1963

 

Sündisin Tacoma, Washingtonis, aktiivsesse eesti perekonda. Minu lapsepõlves (5-aastaselt), elasime 3 aastat Saksamaal. Seal käisin Stuttgardi eesti koolis. Tagasi USA-s, ühinesin Seattle’i rahvatantsurühmaga, samuti olin ka sealses iluvõimlemise grupis. Võtsin alati osa Lääneranniku Eesti Päevadest. 1985 lõpetasin University of Washingtoni.

 

Peale lõpetamist tulin idakaldale, saades praktikandi (interni) koha JBANC’i juures. Idakaldal olen ka osalenud rahvatantsurühmas ja laulnud Baltimore Eesti Naiskooris. 1989  jätkasin õpinguid Columbia ülikoolis New Yorgis, mille lõpetasin PhD kraadiga. Samal ajal õpetasin New Yorgi Eesti Kooli Lasteaias. Praegune töökoht on Bethesda, MD-is asuva National Institute of Health juures, kus olen programmidirektor.

Born in Tacoma Washington into a family that was active in the Estonian community.  At the age of 5 my family moved to Germany for three years where I went to the Stuttgart Estonian School.  Upon returning to Washington State, I joined both the Seattle Estonian Folk Dance Group and the Rhythmic Gymnastics Group. I loved participating in the West Coast Estonian Festivals.

 

In 1985 I graduated from the University of Washington.  Shortly after graduating I moved to the Greater Washington DC area upon accepting an internship at JBANC (Joint Baltic American National Committee).  While there, I joined the Baltimore Estonian Women’s Choir and the Washington D.C. Estonian Folk Dance Group.  In 1989 I moved to New York to continue my education at Columbia University, from which I earned a Ph.D.  In New York I served as a kindergarten teacher at the Estonian School. I have since then relocated to Bethesda, MD, where I am employed at the National Institute of Health as a Program Director.

 

I am interested in being considered for the Estonian American National Council both to continue my  commitment to Estonian activities and to help keep Estonian culture alive and well in the US.

 

ILMAR VANDERER

Born: 1968

 

Sündinud ja üles kasvanud Ameerikas. Aktiivselt toetanud USA eestlaste kogukonna tegevust ja järjekindlalt töötanud, et tugevdada sidemeid Eesti ja Ameerika eestlaste vahel. Oma loodud firma Baltic Business Information Network edendas ja hõlbustas äritegevust ja investeeringuid Eesti ja Ameerika vahel. 2005-2011. a. töötasin tasuta Jim ja Maureen Tusty’ga “Singing Revolution“ dokumentaalfilmi rahastamise, levitamise ja turustamisega. Juhtisin filmi teavituskampaaniat, mis tutvustas enneolematu ulatusega Eesti ajalugu, kultuuri, muusikat ja taasiseseisvumist Ameerika publikule.

 

ERKÜ Esinduskogu liige alates 1994. a. ja juhatuse liige alates 1998. a. Kaasnevalt olnud juhatuse liige NYEHS-is, Lakewoodi Eesti Ühingus, EELK Bergen County Koguduses, Korp! Frat. Estica USA Koondises, ning ESTO ’92 reklaam direktor. Osalenud Balti-Ameerika kogukonna tegevuses, kaasarvatud JBANC ja US-Baltic Foundation. NYEHS Eesti Kooli parim lõpetaja 1985. a. Lõpetasin Duke University 1990. a., õppides politoloogiat, massikommunikatsiooni, ajakirjandust ja filmindust. Täiendavad uuringud New York University rahvusvahelise kaubanduse programmis. Elukutseliselt sidepidamise ja suhtekorralduse spetsialist.

 

Born in 1968, raised in USA, active supporter of Estonian community activities, working to strengthen ties between Estonia and Estonian-Americans. Co-founded Baltic Business Information Network consulting firm to promote trade, tourism and economic development projects between Estonia and US. Assisted Jim and Maureen Tusty without pay from 2005-2011 on fundraising, distribution and marketing of documentary film “The Singing Revolution.” Supervised national publicity campaign to introduce Estonia’s history, culture, music and struggle for independence to American audiences on an unprecedented scale. EANC council member since 1994, board member since 1998.

 

Past board member of NYC Estonian House, Lakewood Estonian House, Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bergen County, academic fraternity Estica, and Media Relations/Community Outreach Director for ESTO ’92 festival. Active supporter of Baltic-American community activities, including JBANC and US-Baltic Foundation. NYC Estonian School valedictorian of 1985, Duke University graduate in 1990, with studies in political science, film, journalism and mass communications, and additional studies in international trade and finance at New York University. As communications and public relations specialist, have worked for major US museums, cultural institutions, political campaigns and media/advertising firms.

 

TÕNU VANDERER

Residence: Upper Montclair, New Jersey
Born: 1933

 

Sündinud 1933. a. Rakveres; teeninud kaks aastat USA armees allohvitserina Koreas;  lõpetanud Chicago Technical College arhitektuuri alal. Oman arhitektilitsensi New Yorgis, New Jerseys, Connecticutis ja Vermontis. Töötanud üle 30 aasta Port Authority of NY & NJ, viimati projektiarhitektina; oma büroo New Jerseys alates 1998. a. Ameerika arhitektide AIA liige alates 1970. a.

 

Olnud NYE Haridusseltsi Eesti Kooli õpetaja 15 aastat ja juhataja 5 aastat; Eesti Koolide Keskuse USA’s juhataja; NYE Haridusseltsi auliige; Lakewoodi Eesti Ühingu  juhatuse mitmekordne liige ja esimees 9 aastat. Olnud Eesti Üliõpilaskonna USA’s juhatuse liige ja esimees; Korp! Fraternitas Estica USA Koondise mitmekordne juhatuse liige ja esimees, Eesti Korporatsioonide Liit  juhatuse liige ja esimees.
Olen olnud ERKÜ juhatuse liige ja praegune ERKÜ Esinduskogu liige. Olen nõus edasi kandideerima ja töötama ERKÜ liikmeskonnas ja jätkama seda väärikat ja vajalikku rahvuslikku tööd.

 

Born in 1933 in Rakvere, Estonia, served two years in US Army as non-commissioned officer in Korea, graduated from Chicago Technical College in architecture. Earned architect licenses in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Vermont. Worked for over 30 years at Port Authority of NY & NJ as project architect. Private practice architect in New Jersey since 1998. American Institute of Architects AIA member since 1970.

 

Past community leadership positions and board memberships include: NYC Estonian School instructor for 15 years and principal for 5 years, director of Estonian Schools Center in USA, honorary member of NYC Estonian House, president of Lakewood Estonian House for 9 years, member of USA Estonian Students League, academic fraternity Estica president, and president of Estonian Academic Fraternities Association.

 

As a former EANC board member and current EANC council member, I wish to seek membership in the XXI Council to continue EANC’s worthy, patriotic work on behalf of the Estonian-American community.

 

VIIU VANDERER

Residence: Somerset, New Jersey
Born: 1944

 

Alustasin kooliteed New Jersey’s ja  lõpetasin Rutgers University College /BA Sociology.  Töötasin üle 22 aasta AT&T firmas kuni varajase pensionile minekuni. Nagu enamus pagulaseestlasi, osalesin noorteorganisatsioonides: gaidid, laagrid, rahvatants, võimlemine, laulukoor, kirik (leer), spordiüritused, Esto’del esinemised, teater, akadeemiline kuuluvus korp! Filiae Patriae. Hiljem kuulusin NYEHSi juhatusse ja õpetasin NY Eesti Koolis. Aastast 1997 töötasin Lakewoodi Eesti Ühingu juhatusega, toimetades nende Lakewoodi Ekspressi 13 aastat ja õpetasin sealses eesti koolis.

 

Olen kuulunud ERKÜ’sse üle 20 aasta ja osalenud mitmetel konverentsidel ja poliitilistel aktsioonidel.  Olen aidanud korraldada mitmeid rahvuslikke üritusi, aktuseid, tähtpäevi, jms. Aastast 1991 oleme taastanud isa talumaja Eestis ja püüdnud arendada Lääne-Virumaa maaelu. Olen kinkinud Eestis kohalikele raamatukogudele väliseesti kirjandust. Toetasin vabadusvõitleja Enn Tarto dokumentaalfilmi „Üksinda ja koos“.  Olen osa võtnud mitmetest Laulupidudest Eestis ja paljudest konverentsidest/üritustest.   

 

Osalen mitmes organisatsioonis ja tutvun paljude USA eestlastega ja sooviksin nende seisukohti viia ka ERKÜ organisatsiooni.  ERKÜ peaks peegeldama mitmekesiseid rahvuskaaslaste mõtteid ja tõekspidamisi.  Ameerika eestlaskond ja tegevus on mulle palju andnud üles kasvades New Jersey’s ja soovin kaasa aidata ERKÜ töös nii kuidas võimalik.  Peale Eesti taasiseseisvumist külastan Eestit tihti ja leian alati võimalusi seal tutvustada väliseestlaste panust.  Soovin jälgida  eesti ajaloo käsitlemist meedias ja pidurdada ajaloo võltsimist.  „Eesti asja“ ajamine on maast madalast olnud südamelähedane ja teisiti ei oskaks üldse ette kujutada.  

 

Began Elementary education in New Jersey. Graduated from Rutgers University College, BA Sociology. Worked for AT&T for 22 years until early retirement. As was typical for my generation, I participated in most of the Estonian-American organizations:  girlguides, summer camps, folkdancing, eurythmics, choir, church activity, sports, Esto performances, theater, member of the sorority Filiae Patriae. NYEHS Board member and teacher of the NY Estonian School.  From 1997 active Board member of Lakewood Estonian Association, Inc. and editor of their newsletter for 13 years and teacher at their Estonian School.  I have been a member of EANC for more than 20 years and participated in many conferences and political action events.  I have helped to organize many cultural events.  Since 1991 my family has restored our homestead in Lääne-Virumaa and contributed to local activities and donated to local libraries.  Sponsored freedom fighter Enn Tarto’s documentary film “Alone and together”.  I have participated in many Song Festivals in Estonia and enjoyed many cultural/political functions in many Estonian cities.

 

Since I belong to many Estonian organizations and interact with the diaspora I would like to represent their views in the EANC organization, which should reflect a variety of opinions and convictions.  Growing up in the Estonian-American community in New Jersey I have enjoyed the cultural education from the older generation and wish to contribute to the next as much as possible.  Visiting Estonia frequently I find opportunities to explain the activities/contributions of the diaspora. I keep current on Estonian news via internet and how history is covered by Estonian media (which is somewhat influenced by Russian propaganda).  Active participation in the Estonian-American community is and always has been very important to me.

 

URMAS WOMPA

Sündinud Kanadas, elanud peamiselt USA’s 1963. a. saadik. Noorena tegev skautluses. Cornell University BA, University of Chicago MBA. Viimased 27 aastat JPMorgan pangas investeeringute haldamise alal Managing Director’i tiitliga. Osalenud aastate jooksul eestlaste ja baltlaste kultuurilises ja poliitilises tegevuses Toron-tos, Baltimores, Chicagos, Hartfordis ja New Yorgis. Metsaülikooli komitee liige 70’ndatel aastatel. BATUN’ i (Baltic Appeal to the United Nations) president 14 aastat. Eesti presidendi poolt koos-tatud väliseestlaste komitee liige  1991.a.

 

Vabatahtlik tööjõud Eesti Vabariigi ÜRO esinduses tiitlitega esimene sekretär 1991-3 a. ja nõuandja 1993-5 a. ERKÜ esinduskogu liige üle 20 aasta. 1997. a. osalesin semina-ril Eestis ühe erafirma juures, et aidata treenida noori finantsalal (programm katkes 1998 a. rublakriisi tõttu). Abielus, kahe lapse isa. Osalesin regivärsside esitamisel Toronto rahvalaulugrupiga Baltimore Eesti Päevadel. Soovin toetada Eestit ja Eesti-Ameeriklaste tegevust, hoida alles sidemeid nendega, kellega olen koos töötanud üle aastate, ja olla valmis kaasa aitama ERKÜ töös ajal, kui geopo-liitiline olukord Euroopas on halvenemas.

 

I was born in Canada and have mainly lived in the US since 1963. Active in Estonian scouting as a youth. B’Arch undergraduate degree from Cornell, MBA in Finance from the University of Chicago. I have worked as an investment professional at JPMorgan for the last 27 years, present title Managing Director. Over the years, I have participated in Estonian and Baltic cultural and political events in Toronto, Baltimore, Chicago, Hartford and New York – including arts organizations. Member of the Metsaülikool Committee in the 1970’s. BATUN (Baltic Appeal to the United Nations) president for 14 years. Member of Estonian President’s non-resident advisory committee in 1991.

 

Volunteered at the Republic of Estonia Mission to the UN as First Secretary 1991-3, Adviser 1993-5. EANC member for 20-plus years. In 1997, participated in a private firm’s seminar to train young finance professionals in Estonia (discontinued after the 1998 ruble crisis). Married with two children. Performed Setu folk songs with a Toronto folk-singing group at the Baltimore Esto festival. Membership in the EANC helps me to support Estonian American activities, maintain contact with other activists, and be ready to help EANC’s work in response to the worsening geopolitical situation in Europe.
