Dr. John J. Sein passed away at home on Staten Island, New York on October 25, 2014. Born in Viljandi, Estonia, in 1934, Dr. Sein spent his career as a physicist and college professor.
He earned a bachelor’s degree from Union College in 1956, a master’s degree from Yale University in 1958, and a Ph.D. in theoretical physics from New York University in 1969.
After some time at RCA Corporation’s Surface Communications Systems Laboratory, he spent the balance of his career as a Professor of Physics at St. Peter’s College in Jersey City, where he performed research and taught students for about 40 years.
He published a number of scholarly papers in the field of optics, some of which continue to be cited in scholarly publications to this day. Dr. Sein was also a talented writer of poetry, an interest he held for many years.
He is survived by his beloved sons, Robert J. Sein and Andrew J. Sein, daughters-in-law, Kathryn Sein and Aubrie Sein, and grandchildren, Charlotte Sein and Evan Sein, as well as his sister, Virve Ettinger, and niece, Grace Schoeniger.
