Estonia Begins Term as Member of UN Security Council
On January 1, President Kersti Kaljulaid raised the United Nations flag in front of the Office of the President at Kadriorg to mark the beginning of Estonia’s membership of the UN Security Council. “Estonia will be at the toughest diplomatic negotiating table in the world for the next two years,” Kaljulaid said. “This makes Estonia indisputably larger than our population, area or GDP naturally allows.”
Introducing Structural Engineer A. Komendant in His Country of Birth
An exhibition entitled “Miracles in Concrete. Structural Engineer August Komendant” opens on January 10 at the Estonian Museum of Architecture in Tallinn. Komendant (1906 Järvamaa – 1992 New Jersey), was a man of great importance to the art of construction in Estonia before the war, and to the surprise of many today, designed and completed numerous post-war architectural works of excellence throughout the world. He also had a productive collaboration with fellow Estonian-born architect Louis Kahn. The exhibition runs until April 26.
100-Second Silence to Commemorate Those Who Fell in the War of Independence
On Friday, January 3, at 10:30 am, those who lost their lives in the Estonian War of Independence will be remembered with a 100-second silence across Estonia. The day marks the 100th anniversary of the ceasefire between the Republic of Estonia and Soviet Russia, followed by the signing of the Tartu Peace Treaty on February 2, 1920.
L.A. Times Interviews Director of Oscar-Shortlisted “Truth and Justice”
On Dec. 31, the Los Angeles Times published an interview with Estonian filmmaker Tanel Toom entitled “Estonia’s long-gestating “Truth and Justice” reveals universal, personal struggles”. “Truth and Justice” (Tõde ja õigus) is a 2019 Estonian epic drama film based on A.H. Tammsaare’s 1926 novel, which has become the highest-grossing Estonian film in history.
