Language Week Offers Chance at Prize
The first ever worldwide Estonian Learning Week will take place on September 23-29 and everyone is encouraged to particiapate: learn, help teach or spread the word. Estonian Rapper Tommy Cash Touring U.S with Oliver Tree
Estonian rapper and conceptual artist Tommy Cash will be touring in the U.S. as the special guest of vocalist, composer and filmmaker Oliver Tree’s “Goodbye Farewell Tour”. The first of 26 concerts will be on September 13 in Vancouver and the tour wraps up November 2 in Chicago. Known for his outrageous videos featuring controversial content, Cash’s shared exhibition with American fashion designer Rick Owens is on at the KUMU Art Museum in Tallinn.
Estonian Hound Close to Official Dog Breed Status
In early September, the board of the FCI (Fédération Cynologique Internationale ) finally approved the Estonian Hound as a pre-recognized FCI breed. The Estonian Hound (eesti hagijas) is a scent hound-like breed and the only dog breed developed in Estonia. Mixes of local hounds with Beagles and Swiss Hounds met all the requirements of the desired hound breed which was subsequently bred in1947.
Man Dies After Self-Immolation Protest Over Language Policies in Russia’s Udmurtia
A 79-year-old man who lit himself on fire protesting against Russia’s language policies in the capital of Udmurtia died on September 10. He was among a group of local experts who had signed an open letter calling on the Udmurt parliament not to support a bill approved by Russia’s lower house of parliament last year, cancelling the mandatory teaching of indigenous languages in Russia’s so-called ethnic regions and republics, where there is a relatively high proportion of non-Russian ethnic groups.
