“Variety” Names Estonian Director Among Those to Watch in 2020
“Variety” magazine has unveiled its sixth edition of ten Europeans to watch, “spotlighting ten rising talents from across the continent, who are poised for breakthroughs in 2020”. The selection includes emerging actors, directors, writers and producers, with Estonian filmmaker Tanel Toom among them.
Toom directed and wrote the Oscar shortlisted film “Truth and Justice.”
U.S. Sports Academy Names Kelly Sildaru Athlete of the Year
Estonian freestyle skier Kelly Sildaru, who continues to impress at the global level, has been selected top woman athlete 2019 by the United States Sports Academy. Sildaru, 17, has won three gold medals at the X Games, most recently this month, as well as a gold medal in slopestyle at the Youth Winter Olympic Games in Lausanne, Switzerland on January 18.
Tartu Peace Treaty Centennial Celebrations Begin
The 100th anniversary of the Tartu Peace Treaty will be celebrated with an exhibition, joint events, presentations and moments of reflection in Tartu and across Estonia. On February 2, 100 years will have passed since the signing of the Tartu Peace Treaty between the Republic of Estonia and Soviet Russia, which ended the War of Independence and with which Russia recognized the independence and borders of the Republic of Estonia.
Winter With no Ice May be Catastrophic For Baltic Seals
According to marine biologist Mart Jüssi, who has studied ringed seals for 30 years, this winter, which has seen practically no sub-zero temperatures or ice cover on the Baltic Sea, could prove catastrophic for local ringed seals, who give birth to their pups on the sea ice and make shelters for them in the snow drifts atop the ice.
With no ice, the females are forced to give birth on land, where the pups are extremely vulnerable to predators.
