Foreign Minister Attends First UN Security Council Discussion
Estonia participated in a high-level discussion at the UN Security Council on January 9, the first since the country took up its non-permanent member position on January 1. Foreign minister Urmas Reinsalu raised the issue of aggression against Ukraine and Georgia in his speech, and presented Estonia’s positions on limiting veto rights in cases that concern genocide or other crimes against humanity.
Integration Foundation Set to Support Estonian Cultural Associations Abroad
The Integration Foundation in Estonia will begin accepting applications for “Support for Estonian Cultural Associations Abroad” as of January 13. The deadline for accepting applications is February 13, 2020. The purpose of the grants is to support the activities of Estonian cultural societies abroad as well as the mediation of Estonian cultural events and to develop a sense of connection with the Estonian state in Estonian communities abroad.
Grants for Archival Projects Related to Estonian Cultural Heritage Abroad
The National Archives of Estonia has announced the 2020 call for proposals for archival projects supporting the preservation of Estonian heritage abroad. This state public grant can be applied for by both individuals and organizations for projects aimed at mapping, collecting, preserving and making available to the public the cultural heritage of Estonians in exile. Applications will be accepted until February 3.
Hollywood Reporter Considers “Truth and Justice” a Favorite
The Hollywood Reporter website has ranked what it believes are the strongest contenders among the films in this year’s Oscars race. In the Best International Feature Film category, the Estonian entry “Truth and Justice” directed by Tanel Toom, stands alongside the South Korean film “Parasite”, which just won a Golden Globe award for Best Motion Picture – Foreign Language.
