Washington, DC (JBANC) -The Joint Baltic American National Committee, Inc. (JBANC) is pleased to announce that it will co-sponsor a full-day conference with the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars on the soon-to-be released NATO Strategic Concept. The event will take place on Friday, May 21, 2010 at the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington, DC.
NATO member states face a world of increasingly complex and ever more urgent security challenges, including terrorism, organized crime, cyber security and environmental threats due to global warming. Although NATO has expanded to include new members, it has not undertaken fundamental reforms to address the new realities of the post-Cold War world.
One year ago, NATO’s Secretary General was given the task of elaborating a new Strategic Concept. A Group of Experts, chaired by Dr. Madeleine Albright, has drafted this document, which is due to be released by the middle of May. This document will form the basis of the new agreement among NATO allies when they meet later this year. We are pleased that Dr. Albright has agreed to give the keynote at our conference.
This conference will address three broad topics: competing visions of NATO’s future mission and role; new security challenges facing the Transatlantic Alliance; and the institutional requirements for NATO to adapt to 21st Century realities.
Speakers and agenda will be posted soon. The event will take place in the 5th floor conference room and is open to the public.
