For 75 years, the newspaper Vaba Eesti Sõna (Free Estonian Word) has been a faithful companion to the Estonian-American community, keeping Estonian families in far-away places and also those close by connected, and abreast of community news, current events, cultural happenings, social announcements, and every day helps with Estonian traditions and homelife. In today´s unsettled world, community journalism is more important than ever.
This important anniversary conference will discuss the role played by Vaba Eesti Sõna in keeping alive hope and the fight for restored independence in Estonia and its part in connecting the Estonian community abroad. We will also discuss the chronicle’s continued relevance, as Estonians abroad continue championing Estonian culture, values, and interests in their everyday lives.
Join new and veteran newspaper editors, journalists, staff, contributors, and supporters for an intelligent conference on the life and times of Estonians in America through the pages of the Vaba Eesti Sõna.
We look forward to seeing you in person, at 2 pm at the New York Estonian House. Pre-registration is not required, donations are welcome.
