ERR News – The University of Tartu's computer science institute has received a grant from one of the world's largest web service providers – 6,500 euros worth of computing power on Amazon's servers.
Senior researcher at the Institute of Computer Science's distributed systems group, Satish Srirama said access to Amazon's servers is valuable to the students due to the possibility of seeing for themselves the theory applied in practice.
"In many studies, our students are already using cloud computing services, but such as in mobile or entrepreneurial computing projects. This grant allows us even better access to even more powerful servers."
Head of the Institute of Computer Science Jaak Vilo: "The primary value for our students is related to familiarization with the solutions offered by Amazon as a market leader. This way they can launch their own startup firms knowing that server resource scalability is not a problem."
He added: "The workforce market also needs specialists with the relevant know-how. The grant obtained by Dr. Srirama shows the quality of the research and academic work being done at Tartu.”
A number of cloud computing projects are already under way at Tartu, such as Sci Cloud, which examines how to create separate internal cloud computing servers at the university, using existing compu-ter clusters.
