Filmmaker Terje Toomistu was in San Francisco on May 24 for a screening and discussion of her new documentary film “Homing Beyond” (Põlvkond piiri taga), about a new generation’s experience of immigration, identity, and belonging.
Terje Toomistu: ““It was a great turnout for the screening of “Homing Beyond” at San Francisco’s cult cinema Roxie Theater. So interesting meeting Estonians of various generations and various migratory backgrounds living here in the Bay Area. Some of them born here to Estonian parents who left Estonia after the II World War, some of them have moved here 20-something years ago, some of them are from the Gen Y portrayed in the documentary – those who left Estonia as young adults simply to pursue their dreams abroad.
It was also nice to be back at the Roxie – I was here a couple of years ago with my previous documentary “Soviet hippies” and had a great time with 2 sold out shows.
The screening was hosted by the San Francisco Estonian Society, in cooperation with the Consulate General of Estonia in San Francisco – thanks so much for putting it together! “
