Kaja Kallas NY Times Opinion Essay: Putin Can’t Think He’s Won This War
On March 24, a guest opinion essay by Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas appeared in the New York Times in which she reminds Americans that Vladimir Putin must not win the war against Ukraine. In the introduction of the opinion piece, “I’m the Prime Minister of Estonia. Putin Can’t Think He’s Won This War,” Kallas recalls the story of her mother, who was deported to Siberia in 1949 with her mother and grandmother as a six-month-old child. “Today, the Kremlin is reviving genuine barbarism,” Kallas writes. Estonia Has Received 22,624 Ukrainian War Refugees
According to the Estonian Police and Border Guard Board, 22,624 Ukrainian war refugees have entered Estonia since February 27. A total of 6,550 applications for temporary protection have been registered. There are a total of 6106 people in accommodation establishments, including 2264 children. (Pg 3)
Estonians Have Supported Ukraine With 9 Million Euros
Including state support provided through state agencies from the national budget, Estonia has provided 10 million euros in humanitarian aid to Ukraine. The people of Estonia have supported the people of Ukraine with aid totaling 9 million euros. (Pg 3)
Aleksa Gold Sets Two New Estonian Records in Toronto
Estonian swimmer Aleksa Gold has set two domestic records at a competition in Toronto, Canada, her hometown. Gold, 22, surpassed her own record in the 200-meter women’s freestyle with a time of 1.58.01. She then went on to break Maria Romanjuk’s 400-meter freestyle time by seven-tenths of a second, putting in a time of 4.45.95. Gold also holds the domestic records in the 100-meter and 200-meter backstroke. Gold’s mother Pille Leitham Gold is the daughter of Estonian war refugees who settled in Montreal.
